Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch
OBJECTIVE : To calculate and analyze whether the gap between the given Fender design and Wheel Arch is as per standard, and to Providing the supporting report.
INTRODUCTION:

FENDER:
- Fender is the US English term for the part of an automobile (vehicle body) that frames a wheel well (the fender underside).
- Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
- When vehicle is moving, tires pick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles
- Generally fender can be classify into two following categories:

FENDER ARCH :
- Wheel arch is the semi circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle .
- The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passanger and padestrian from the projection of stone and mud.
- For the vehicle to has different permit in different countries , the wheel arch of fender must be compliant with the standard and regulation set by respective countries.
Fender regulations can vary by different countries. Here are some examples:
JAPAN REGULATIONS:

EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

US REGULATIONS:

OBSERVATIONS and CALCULATIONS :
CONSIDERING THE EUROPEAN REGULATION VALUES FOR GIVEN FENDER DESIGN:
- Measuring CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE SA-SA
- According to the regulation at all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
- Wheel guard required that the value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

SA-SA =9.9488
SB-SB = 10
SC-SC = 0.1113
SD-SD = 2.8
SE-SE = 5.8
RESULT :

CONCLUSION :
In this challenge, we successfully learned about the different regulations for fender design. Based on the results above, we can conclude that the fender does not meet the European Regulations due to the insufficient clearance between the fender arch wheel and the outermost wheel, which should be a minimum of 10 mm. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the clearance to ensure that this fender design meets the European Regulation standard.
