FENDER DESIGN

INTRODUCTION:
Fender is the American english term for the part of an automoblie, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

IMPORTANCE OF CAR FENDERS:
1. Fenders are sheet of metals covering the wheels of an automobile
2. Fenders are designed in a manner to provide ressistance against roadside debris.
3. Fenders serve an important purpose as it adds the aesthetic look of the vehicle as well as save the BIW components from various things such as stones, mud, water etc.
TYPES OF CAR FENDERS:
There are two types of car fenders:-
1. Full bumper type
2. Half bumper type
Full bumper type Fenders:

This type of bumper is now not commonly used because of many reasons. First reason being the production of scrap while peroducing these type of fenders are greater. The blank sheet of aluminium or steel used to produce this fender has more wastages. Second this type of fender adds more weight to the car. Third that it is not economicaly good to manufacture.
Half Bumper type Fenders:

Nowadays this type of fenders are widely used. This is because the issue of wastage materials is resolved with this design. Also the weight of the vehicle is also reduced by using this type of fenders.
PURPOSE OF FENDERS:
1. CLEANLINESS- Protects the car and the passengers from water, snow, mud, ice, stones, as we drive.
2. SAFETY- Protects pedestrians from the wheel. example; it is better to be it by a laterally moving fender than a rolling tyre kept loose, streaming items from being wraped up in a rolling wheel.
3. AERODYNAMICS- Provides smoothness to the car profile so that the driver does not get a lot of drag from the exposed wheels.
4. APPEARENCE- Provides a streamlined look to a car.
FRONT FENDER DESIGN:
The design elements taken into consideration while desigining a fender are:
1. Drip area
2. Sill Mount
3. Bumper Mount
4. A Pillar Mount
5. Splash/Baffle Mount
Master section of the Drip area:
SKIN DATA:

DESIGN CRITERIA:
- Embosses are provided to add strength to the fender
- Smooth curves are to be maintained for easy manufacturing of the panel
- Ribs are provided to drip area mount to avoid vibration and for extra support and strength
- Maintaining a 10mm flat surface area from the flat surface for fastner holes.
- Fillets of 2-3mm are to be maintained.
- Thickness to the fender provided is 0.75mm.
DRIP MOUNTING AREA:

SILL MOUNTING AREA:

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA:

A-PILLAR MOUNTING AREA:

BAFFLE MOUNTING AREA:

CONCLUSION: Thus all the mounting area for the fender designed from skin data and master section have been completed by following rules and standard measurements.
