Fender Design Challenge

                                                FENDER DESIGN

OBJECTIVES:-

  1. Create the drip area followed by the given master section.
  2. For the Sill, Bumper, Baffle and A-Pillar mount create your own design according to the Engineering standard that you learned.
  3. Prepare a report with all the relevant images included for the mounting points created.

INTRODUCTION

Fender

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel Arch (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

There are two types of fenders are there. They are,

  1. Full bumper type: Full Bumper Type is not used now a days because it requires large size of blank to produce the part and it occupies more space.
  2. Half Bumper type: Half bumper is used because the waste of material is less & can produce two fender at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet. Also to reduce the weight & cost mostly half bumper fenders are produced.

Mounting Of Fender.

Modification of the skin data By Creating Mounting Points.

  1. Drip area mounting.

  • This mounting is attached to the engine compartment of the car.
  • A min 150mm distance is kept from the bumper side and a distance 300mm or less can be kept from the A pillar side.
  • The edge of the mounting should at least 10mm away from any nearby component in the engine.
  • The drip area height must be less than or equal to 40 mm from the top.
  • The embosses that are created on the drip mounting should be flat with respect to the curvature.
  • A dart is provided at the edge of the drip mounting to increase the stiffness.
  1. Sill area mounting.

  • This mounting point is basically on the bottom of the fender.
  • The mounting part should be created such that the fender is firmly attached to the sill to avoid NVH issues.
  • The embosses that are created on the drip mounting should be flat with respect to the curvature.
  1. A pillar mounting

  • This mount is designed in such a way to connect with A-Pillar of car Side body.
  • This is a structural pillar that combines the body to the roof. It makes the sides of the windshield at rest and front fenders are fastened.
  1. Bumper Mounting.

  • It is placed at the front side of the fender.
  • As the bumpers are mounted over the fender the mounting area will not be visible.
  1. Baffle Mounting area.

  • This Mount is used to install the Baffle, baffle is a sponge type material which is installed above the wheel arch to fender.
  • Baffle is installed to reduce the noise and vibration developed during running the vehicle.
  • Embosses are not needed since it is a free end which is not main attachment to the body of the car.
