Fender Design Challenge
AIM: To design the car fender according to the given design parameters.
FENDER:
Fender is the American english term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

ADVANTAGES OF FENDER:
- The primary purpose of fender is to prevent the rotating wheels and tires to throw particles such as mud, rocks, sand, liquids, and other road substances into the air.
- It is also used to hide rust or body damage around the wheel well.
- These are typically made to be rigid and paired up with flexible mud flaps.
TYPES OF FENDER:

FULL BUMPER TYPE:
It is used in old days this creates much wastage of material and the unnecessary cost is increased.
HALF BUMPER TYPE:
This type is used for mainly cost and material cutting purpose as this type is also provide easy for manufacturing and the strength is also improved.
DESIGN PARAMETERS:

MOUNTINGS:

MANUFACTURING PROCESSS:
These operations are involved in manufacturing process
- Embossing
- Bending
- Cutting and Blanking.

Fender is basically mounted on 5 important regions. They are
- Drip area
- A-pillar mounting area
- Sill mounting area
- Bumper mounting area
- Baffle mounting area
Drip area:
It is the major mounting for the fender. Its designed a clearance of 200mm from the back of fender for the cowl setup. And clearance of 150 mm from the front of fender for a headlamp housing unit.

Darts are provided at the bends to stiffen the sheet metal at that region

A Pillar mounting area:
It is located near the cowl of the vehicle where the fender is fastened with the bottom edge of the windshield. This mounting is covered with the side rear view mirror.

Sill mounting area:
The area at ehich bottom of the fender gets connected to the floor near the bottom edge of the door. The mounting is attached with the fasteners.

Bumper mounting area:
It is located beneath the bumper. After fixing the fender with fasteners the bumper will cover the bumper mounting.

Baffle mounting area:
The baffle gets installed to the fender with the help of clips which holds the baffle with the fender along with the wheel arch.

CONCLUSION:
Thus the fender is designed with the necessary mounting points considering the design parameters.
