Fender Design Challenge
TITLE - MODELLING OF FRONT FENDER MOUNTINGS
OBJECTIVE - To design the fender mountings by following the given considerations using nx cad.
INTRODUCTION - Front fender panels are located on the sides of each front wheel. These panels typically cover the sides of the headlights to the hinge of the driver and passenger doors on the A-pillar. A car front fender runs vertically from the hood to the wheel well. All the 5 mountings are to be designed in this report using nx software.
- Application of fender is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire that cause injuries to the pedestrians.
Types of fenders
- Full fender type
- Half fender type
Full fender type - These types of fenders are used earlier and they are mainly designed to expensive cars. It has more weight than half fender type.
Half fender type - Now-a-days, the mostly used fender is half fender type. In INDIA we can mostly we can see half fender type, because it will drastically reduce the blank material price. So that the customer will get better fender at a cheaper price compared to full fender type.
Important mountings of a fender
BODY
It is the front part of the fender has large area which connects other mountings.

A PILLAR
A structural part of a vehicle that extends from the roof to the floorboard and that connects the windshield and front door to the body of the vehicle.

SILL
This area links the fender with a sill that connects the underside of the door of car.

BUMPER MOUNTING
This will connect the fender with front bumper.

DRIP AREA
This is the important mounting in the fender, it is designed as per the given considerations. It connects the fender with engine compartment.

Factors to be considered by master section
- Drip area should be 300mm or less from the back side of fender to occupy the wiper mounting region and 150mm away from the extreme end of the bumper.
- The angle between the hood and fender is minimum 3 degrees.
- Extra 5 degrees is added to the fender drip area to avoid the visibility of engine from outside view.
- Fender mounting distance should not be deeper than 40mm.
- The gap between the engine area and fender mounting should be 10mm or more.

SPLASH COVER
It helps to connect the baffle, a plastic part that protects the fender which also reduces the overall cost of the fender and reduces weight.

- Some additional features like dart are applied in order to improve the strength of the material.
- Sharp corners are filleted and relief are provided to improve the surface of the sheet and to avoid stress concentration at the corners.
CONCLUSION
Hence the fender is designed with all mountings as per the given parameters and conditions.
