Fender Design Challenge

Aim: To create the side fender of the car along with the drip area and other mounting points such as Sill Mount, Bumper Mount, A-Pillar mount.

Introduction:

A fender is the curved portion of the car’s body that sits over and houses the wheels.

The purpose of a fender is pretty simple. Its purpose is to keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. In other words, the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires.

The fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris but it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles on the road. This is why vehicles with large, oversized tires are often required by law to install fender flares.

Design Process:

Here to proceed with the design of the fender,  class A of the fender. was given. This skin data is used as a parent surface to finalize the design of the fender. Apart from this, a master section for the development of the drip area was also given.

Design Methodology:

  • First, the skin data provided by the styling team needs to be extracted.
  • Then the outer edge of the fender was offset inwards to a particular length.
  • Then by using the curve on surface command the unwanted portions were trimmed out using the trim sheet option.
  • By using the law extension different surfaces were extended and required surfaces were obtained for further operations.
  • Also, the drip area was formed using the given master section.
  • Embosses were also made at the required places using the surface geometries and by creating additional datum planes.
  • Then for creating a fastener hole of 5mm, required sketches were made on the surfaces and trimmed afterward.
  • Then the required blends were added using face blend and edge blend.

Below are the attached images of the surfaces after applying the above operations.
