Fender Design Challenge

AIM: To create the drip area for the following fender design and also create mountings and Embrasses .

TOOLS REQUIRED:

INTRODUCTION TO THE FENDER:

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

The fender of a vehicle contains the tire and wheel and would generally refer to the front left and right of the vehicle. The rear tires are covered or contained in what is generally referred to as a quarter panel, but may also be referred to as a fender. Bumpers are located on the front and rear of a vehicle. 1970’s and older often had chrome or exposed metal bumpers, in the 80’s / 90’s the bumpers were often polyurethane or “ plastic” with a metal bumper bar inside. The plastic bumpers are usually painted the body color. Most vehicles have both front and rear bumpers but there were some pickups delivered without a rear bumper.

ender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or another vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other roads spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Bumper is installed on front and rear side of the vehicle. It's main function is to absorb the impact upon collision, minimizing the damage to main body.

Fender is the frame installed over the wheel.

Types of fenders

Bumper is a part which absorbs impact due to collision.

There are two types of Bumpers used to make fender.

1.Full bumper type

2.Half bumper type

From one blank of metal sheet only one full bumper can be manufactured but we can produce two half bumpers and also the weight can be reduced drastically.

FENDER DESIGN

DRIP AREA

  • It is the area where the fender is attached to the engine housing through fasteners.
  • There should be some consideration following the drip area design of the fender
  • From back side of the front fender there will be a clearence of 200 mm from the cowl mounting area
  • From front of the front fender there will be a clearence of 150mm for the light housing area
  • Remaining area we can use for the drip area
  • Height of the fender can be 80mm for both child and adult for increase in the inertial force due to accident impact
  • Drip area will not reach the engine assembly as there will be a 50mm ,so there will be a L -shaped bracket to connect with it.

DRIP AREA

WHEEL ARCH AREA

The wheel arch area is semi circular part mounted above the wheel of the vehicle .

SILL MOUNTING AREA

The area of the mounting directly below the panel supporting the floor and used to combine floor and the body.

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA

A mounting area of fender to bumper(horizontal bar fixed across the front and back of the motor vehicle to reduce damage in the collosion).

A - PILLAR MOUNTING

There are three pillars of the car while reffering the design of the car

The naming system adopted for the pillars possibly originates from their shapes as seen from sides. The A-pillar resembles the shape of the alphabet “A”.

The other pillars resemble “B,” “C,” and “D” letters, respectively. Is it a mere co-incidence or designer’s creativity? If the vehicle has a stretched body structure with additional doors, such as in the case of a limousine, it gets more than one B pillars. In such a case, the manufacturers name them as B1, B2, and B3 & so on while moving from front to rear of the vehicle. For example, rescue teams communicate the names of pillars (A/B/C/D) while cutting the pillars with cutters. Hence, the naming of pillars is important while rescuing the passengers trapped in accident-damaged vehicles.
