Fender Design

FRONT FENDER DESIGN:

OBJECTIVE:

To design a fender model with necessary mounting with the given class A surface or skin data.

INTRODUCTION:

The main function of a fender is to prevent mud, rock, water and road debris which would damage the car and for pedestrian safety as well.

The fender is diveded into:

  • Front fender
  • Rear fender

Types of front fender:

  • Full front fender
  • Half front fender

Full fender: In earlier stage the fender was designed in a way it covers wheel. And it increased the weight of the vehicle. The material wastage is more in full fender design.

Half fender: Modern day cars are using half fenders designed, as it protects the vehicle and the weight is reduced compared to full fender design. The material utilisation is great in half fender design.

Fender mounting area like:

  • A-pillar mounting
  • Bumper mounting
  • Drip mounting
  • Sill mounting

Given master section:

The drip area is crucial, it should be followed as per the master section design give. It should have the clearance for cowel mounting and head light mounting. The front side of drip area should have the minimum clearance of 150mm and rear side should have 200mm.

Proper stiffner arrangements are provided for the drip area to increase the strength and support. Smooth surface is maintained throught the model to avoid stress concentration in sharp edges. The emboss must be flat to have a proper mounting of fastners.

Design procedures:

Results:

  • Fender complete design:

  • Drip mounting area:

  • A-pillar mounting area:

  • Sill mounting area:

  • Bumper mounting area:

  • Baffle mounting area:

CONCLUSION:

The front fender design is completed with all the design consideration usign the master section. The NX modle for fender design is attached.
