Fender Design

Aim - To design the fender of a car

Objectives-

  1. Design the fender component which includes (drip area mount, still mount, baffel mount, bumper mount , A pillar mount ) according to master section provided.
  2. To design the component in NX cad

Fender -

Fender ia a component of a vehicle body that is mounted over the wheel to protect the engine and pedisterian from road debris, mud etc.

  • It is manditory for designer to follow the area wise regulation for designing the fender i.e Japanese regulation , European Regulation, Us regulation .
  • These regulations pays more attention on the horizontal cleareance btween wheel arc and fender .
  • This cleareance should be greater than 10 mm for all the section for conformance to european regulation
  • For Japan and US regulation conformance, horizontal cleareance should be greater than 5 mm at all sections .

There are 2 types of fenders

  1. Full bumper type
  2. Half bumper type
  • Full bumper Type

Automobiles in late 80 S were haveing full bumper type fender but due to its high material requirement and weight it got absolute and for manufactureing this fender lot of material waste was generated due to which in recent development full bumper type of fender was converted to half bumper type .

  • Half bumper type

Due to low material wastage and less weight this fender is widely used in recent automobiles

Design considerations -

Master Section-

Types of mounts in fender

  1. Drip area mount -

Drip mounting is major mounting through which the fender is fastened to the engine houseing . the diestance / dimensions are to be strictly followed as per the master section .

2.A pillar mounting area

A pillor mounting region is mounted near cowl area where the fender is fastened near to the bottom edge of wind shield. It is coverred with side rear view mirrior .

3.Still mounting flange

this mounting connectes the bootom of door to the fender .embossed mounting is fastened with fasteners .

4.Bumper mounting Area

It felecitate the fastning of bumper with fender

Manufacturing processes

  • Embossing -Embossing is the process of stamping sheet to give a 3 dimensional look to the part / product sheet .high pressure is applied to the sheet to project impression of punch to the sheet . Relief is another word used for Embossing .
  • Bending -This process involves the bending of sheets to make curved surfaces by applying pressure in tangential direction
  • Drilling - It involves drilling a holes of required dimeter by useing drill bit.

Conclusion -

Fender design is completed useing Siemens NX cad software
