Fender Design

Fender Design

Aim -      To design the Front fender of the Car from the given skin data by following the design rules and given Master section .

Fender :

Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside) . Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers , pedestrains and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speed of rotating wheels while the car is running.

There are two types of fenders -

  1. Full Bumper type Fender
  2. Half Bumper type Fender

Full Bumper type Fender -

These types of fenders were used in earlier models of vehicles. They contribute to the major increment of the steel weight by just covering the front headlights with respect to the bumper region. The problem associated with this kind of fender is there is a lot of wastage in the blank and every inch of a material is a increase in cost to the industry.

Half Bumper Type Fender -

These fenders are mainly used for serving the purpose of cost-cutting and reducing enough proportions of the steel resulting in a reduction of the weight of the vehicle . They can be economically manufacturable & by slightly increasing the blank size we can produce two fenders at a time.

Design Parameters / Mounting Regions -

There are  5 mounting regions on the  fender & they are -

  1. Drip Area mounting
  2. A - pillar mounting
  3. Body/Baffle mounting
  4. Sill mounting
  5. Bumper mounting

Drip Area Mounting -

Given Master Section to be followed while designing Drip Area Mounting -

Drip Area mounting is is the most important part in the fender. This mounting is attached to the engine compartment of the car & fender drip area is mounted via weldnuts to the engine compartment. As per the basic Fender design rules a minimum of 150mm gap is kept from the front or front bumper side of the vehicle and a minimum 200mm or above gap can be kept on the A pillar side of the vehicle & the total length of drip area from the top of fender should be less than 40mm to avoid the spring-back affect & the edge of the mounting should be atleast 10mm away from any nearby component in the engine . Embosses and Ribs are provided to increase the strength of the mounting .

A- pillar mounting -

  • This mounting position is created for attaching the fender to A Pillar of the vehicle.
  • The mounting has to be created by taking the reference from the A-pillar of the vehicle.
  • Enough clearance should be given for the easy mounting of the wiper equipments.

Body / Baffle Mounting -

Body/Baffle mounting are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tire. it protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion & it is mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics .

Sill mounting -

  • Sill mounting is created on the bottom portion of the fender for attaching to the sill.
  • Emboss and Holes are provided to attach and increase the strength of Sill mounting.

Bumper mounting -

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners .

Aftrer creating all the mountings a thickness of 0.75mm is applied to the fender.

CONCLUSION

The front fender is designed according to the given master section and CLASS A Skin Surface as per the OEM Standards .
