Fender Design

AIM: Create the drip area, Sill, Bumper, Baffle(Splash), and A-Pillar mount using the given fender skin and master drawing.

THEORY:

Fender: Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Types of Fenders:

1) Full Bumper Type : Initial models or Older version of cars had this type of fender.

2) Half Bumper Type : This is mostly used in the current models of cars, since we divide the fender into 2 parts - Fender and Bumper respectively. We will be able to save material as the material used for bumper can be plastic which is cheap, less in weight, and also satisfying the role it is made for and coming to fender, it can be made of steel to strengthen the body of the vehicle. Thus, we are decreasing the amount of steel and hence increasing the performance of the car.

Below are the images of fenders available in market:

Common Mounting Regions on Fender:

There are 5 mounting regions on the fender to assemble it on to the car, they are:

- A-pillar mounting

- Body mounting

- Sill mounting

- Bumper mounting / Nose Side

- Drip mounting

Data given :

Master drawing:

PROCEDURE:

-Open the provided fender skin in the CAD software.

-Design of Drip area mounting:

* Considering the Master section, We have designed the drip area. Which is at a distance of <300 mm from the cowl top and 150 mm from the headlamp at the front.

* To increase the strength of the drip area mounting and resist vibration and impact forces, embosses are added.

* Since the length of the drip area is long, we have added stiffeners or darts to strengthen the drip area.

-Design of Sill mounting area:

* Sill is located directly below the bottom of the door, supporting the floor.

-Design of Bumper mounting area:

* It is used to fix the bumper made of plastic to the fender.

-Design of A-Pillar Mounting Area:

* It is a structural pillar that combines the body to the roof.

-Design of Baffle Mounting Area:

* Also called as mudguard, are mounted on the inner side of the fender arch over the tire.

-Ensuring that the part is aesthetic, by applying face blends or edge blends, relief cut, etc.; thicken the part by 0.75 mm toward the inside direction.

-Save the part in the required format.
