FENDER CHALLENGE

FENDER- Fender is a front outer shell of body structure in automobile, motorcycle or vehicle body which is located next to front hood on both left- & right-hand side of the vehicle. Also, rear side fender is called as quarter panel. It covers wheel arch area of the vehicle & give aesthetic look from side profile. Its main purpose to prevent from sand, mud rocks & other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.

There 2 types of fenders

  • Full bumper- Full bumper cover large cross-sectional area of blank sheet metal rolls which produce only one quantity product at a time by manufactures. This type of fenders is now obsolete because of wastage of extra sheet materials, cost lots of expenses & lose for the manufacturers.

  • Half bumper- Half bumper cover very less cross-sectional area of blank sheet metal rolls which can be produce one or more quantity product at a time by manufacturers. This type of bumper is producing less wastage of sheet materials. The advantages for this type bumper give advantage factors, the vehicle light weight is light & improve the performance & fuel efficiency of the vehicles.

There are five hard point mounting for fender

  • A - Pillar mounting
  • Body mounting
  • Sill mounting
  • Bumper mounting
  • Drip mounting

DESIGN METHODLOGY-

MASTER SECTION-

DESIGN OF DRIP AREA-

  • It is important to mount the fender which is connected with the engine compartment, so therefore lot of design constraints is considered while designing the fender
  • For designing the drip area from we need to consider the measurement from A- pillar (200mm or less 300mm) & from the head lamp ASSY side 150mm.
  • Sketch the three mounting fastener provision with embossing to strengthen the mounting.
  • Put the dart accordingly in the drip area to provide addition strength for avoiding swinging effect.

DESIGN OF SILL MOUNTING

Sill mounting is located directly below the panel of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and the body. The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body to support the bottom end of the fender & also used some reinforcement to strengthen it, thus the sill mounting position is designed with holes and emboss. M5 fasteners are used to fix the fenders on the sill body.

DESIGN OF BUMPER MOUNTING

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners.

DESIGN OF BAFFLE MOUNTING

Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tyre. It protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion. They are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics.

CONCLUSION-

The fender design is completed according to the given master section.
