#Challenge 8 Backdoor Design

Name: Sri Gokul P

Course: Automotive Sheet Metal Design using Siemens NX CAD / CATIA V5

BACK DOOR:

A backdoor is located behind the passenger seat and used to access a storage area also known as a luggage compartment.

It is easy to access because of gas stay is presented in the backdoor and opening using electric gas stay with sensors almost this feature in a luxury car.

Common name of backdoor: Dickeys, trunk, tailgate and boot.

Backdoor Material: steel, aluminium.

Benefits of backdoor: low cost, less maintenance, and easy replacement.

TYPE OF BACKDOOR:

They are mostly three types used in automotive industries because of cost-efficient and easy to access.

  1. Top mount.
  2. Side mount.
  3. Bottom mounts.

Top mount

ü Working process: the door is mounted in the hinged to lift upward

ü Gas stay used because easy to access. Most backdoor top mount vehicles used in domestic car

ü Easy access to store luggage.

Side mount

ü Working process: the door is side mounted in the hinged.

ü Backdoor open in outward.

ü Uses: vans, school buses and heavy-duty vehicles.

Bottom mount

ü Working process: the door is bottom mounted in the hinged.

ü Uses: truck, Low-duty vehicles.

MAIN PART IN BACKDOOR:

  1. Inner panel
  2. Outer panel- they are two Parts
  3. Upper outer panel
  4. Lower outer panel
  5. Hinge reinforcement
  6. Wiper reinforcement
  7. Gas stay reinforcement
  8. Latch and striker reinforcement.

Inner Panel

ü It is an important part of the hood because of increased pedestrian safety, the strength of backdoor, durability of the car.

ü In inner panel to increase the durability of the structure includes reinforcement.

Outer Panel

ü It is an important part of the hood because of increased pedestrian safety, the strength of backdoor, durability of the car.

ü In Outer panel to increase the durability of the structure includes reinforcement.

ü It has two Parts:

I. Upper outer panel

II. Lower outer panel

Upper outer panel

Lower outer panel

Upper & lower outer panel assembly

Hinge Reinforcement

ü Hinges are connected car body and backdoor. Mounting is very important because during pedestrian all shock waves will move through hinges to the car body.

Wiper Reinforcement

Gas Stay Reinforcement

ü Gas stay is used to lift the backdoor and the total weight of the backdoor impact the gas stays mount area.

Latch And Striker Reinforcement.

o The purpose of these latches and strikers is to keep your backdoor closed, protecting you from getting injured by flying parts if there are any accidents while driving.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

Here I used the Top and bottom approach to create a back door.

The parameter of thickness is 0.75mm for all parts

  • First, I created an assembly folder of the backdoor, in that given skin data of the backdoor has been reworked.
  • Create the tooling direction for an operation like emboss used as a vector direction.
  • In an inner panel, I create a sealing flange, connecting flange, connecting blends and all other work are done in the inner pane.
  • And create a wiper mount area, gas stay mount area, hinge mount area, and latch & striker mount area in the inner panel of the backdoor.
  • In the outer panel, hemming design and relief work were done.
  • The backdoor reinforcement part is designed for improving the strength in the local area.
  • And all parts are assembled in one assembly part file.

Latch And Striker Reinforcement.

MANUFACTURE TECHNIQUE:

  • Bending: The act of bending involves applying force to a sheet metal workpiece to produce a curvature. In general, bends are used to produce simple curved surfaces instead of complex ones.
  • Hemming: Hemming is a technology used by the automotive industry to join inner and outer closure panels together (hoods, doors, tailgates, etc.). It is the process of bending/folding the flange of the outer panel over the inner one.
  • Hemming is performed in order to:
  • Achieve a better final geometry in the vehicle´s part
  • Add resistance and rigidity to the part
  • Allow safe handling of the part.
  • Stamping: Stamping is the process of cutting and forming metal using a stamping press and a series of dies. The material is commonly used to make auto parts like hubcaps and fenders.
  • Extrusion: Extrusion is a process that is used to create long metal shapes. To make a rod, for example, the metal is pushed into a steel tube. The rod is then "extruded" through the tube to make it longer.

CONCLUSION:

As result, to determine a back door strength using draft analysis. Consider all of the parameters and generated the automobile back door.
