Design of backdoor
Aim :
To use the provided styling surface to come up with a back door design, use appropriate design methodologies, and provide the necessary reinforcements and embosses.
Back Door :
The enclosed space usually at the back of a car where you can put your bags etc.
Back Door Consists of :
- Back Door Outer Panel
- Back Door Inner Panel
- Hinge Reinforcement
- Gas Stay Reinforcement
- Latch and Striker Reinforcement
- Wiper Motor Reinforcement

Inner Panel :

Tooling Direction :

Outer Panel :

Hinge Reinforcement :

Wiper Motor Reinforcement :

Gas Stay Reinforcement :

Latch and Striker Reinforcement :

Draft Analysis :
Draft analysis lets you check parts and/or molds, to make sure they will seperate. Hopefully avoiding locking the part in the mold.

Allowance = 8 deg
Backdoor Assembly :

Relief :
It is done to reduce the stress concentration along the corners and also to decrease the clumping the metal along the corners, by trimming the corner by reducing the radius so that the rollers can pass smoothly.

Hemming :
Hemming is a sheet metal forming process in which sheets are joined by bending it usually to 180°. Automotive body panels and automotive parts such as deck-lids, trunk-lids, doors, hoods and tailgates are formed by hemming process.

Conclusion :
The back door was designed from the given styling surface, Draft Analysis is also performed on the inner panel to check the manufacturing conditions. The Challenge helped in learning the design of the outer panel, wiper motor reinforcement, hinge reinforcement, latch and striker reinforcement.
