Design of backdoor

Design of Backdoor

AIM

To design back door of a car using given outer class ‘A’ Surface

BACKDOOR

A backdoor of a vehicle is the door for the main storage or cargo compartment, often a hatch at the rear of the vehicle. We are going to see how to design a Backdoor of a car.

The backdoor usually consists of an inner panel, an outer panel (2-3), Hinges, gas stay, striker, and in some car wiper motor.

PARTS OF BACKDOOR

  • Inner Panel

  • Outer panel

  • Reinforcements

  • Latch and Striker reinforcements
  • Wiper motor reinforcements
  • Gas stay reinforcements

TYPES OF BACKDOORS

  • Top mounted door

  • Bottom mounted door

  • Side mounted door

MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Force dissipation
  • Hinge position
  • Visibility criteria
  • Gas stay position
  • Material selection
  • Space availability
  • Hemming and relief areas

MAIN OPERTAIONS

Hemming-

Hemming is a forming operation in which the edges of the sheets are folded over other part in order to achieve a tight fit. Normally hemming is used to connect parts together to improve the aesthetics of a part and to reinforce part edges.

Embossing-

Embossing is a metal forming process for forming raised or sunken designs by means of matched males and female roller dies, without any changes in metal thickness or by-passing sheet.

Blanking-

Blanking is a cutting operation of a metal surface and the punched-out article is known as blank.

Punching-

It is similar to blanking but the cut-out hole is the required product whereas the blank is not used.

BACKDOOR ASSEMBLY:

REINFORCEMENTS:

Wiper Motor Reinforcements

Hinge Reinforcements

Gas Stay Reinforcements

Striker Reinforcement

DRAFT ANALYSIS

The draft analysis was done using the tooling direction and it all worked well

FORCE DISSIPATION

The 'Y' Pattern was followed for more impact to be spread aroiund the backdoor rather than the car itself, this shape has been proven to be very effective during crashes and we have done the same .

STRIKER PLACEMENT

CONCLUSION

Thus, using the given class 'A' surface we have designed the Backdoor of the car and using various design considerations also.
