Design of a Backdoor
OBJECTIVE
- To design a backdoor for an automobile using the provided styling surface.
- To provide the necessary reinforcements and embosses to the backdoor.
INTRODUCTION
Backdoors or tailgates are one of the type doors of the vehicle which are located next to the passenger seat and provides access to the luggage compartment. In most of the cars, these backdoors are operated with the help of gas stays which reduces the effort required to lift open the door. In the case of hatchbacks and station wagons, the rear hatch is classified as backdoor.
The backdoor has both inner and outer panels. It has hinges for opening and closing of the door. To facilitate the opening of the tail gate and keeping it in open position there are Gas Stays attached to the backdoor. The rear windshield is housed in the back door itself. So there is an arrangement for wiper motor as well. Back door also facilitates the fixing of Tail Lamps. For closing of back door there is a latch and striker arrangement.

INNER PANEL

- The inner panel is given embosses to improve the strength of the backdoor.
- There are cutouts too which are bend to be used as mastic points.
- Cutouts are given for the tail lamp placement too.
- A draft analysis is done with a tooling direction. The inner panel passes a 7 degree draft analysis.
- Embosses are given for reinforcements for hinges, gas stays, striker and wiper motor.
OUTER PANEL
- Outer panel is divided into upper and lower parts.
- Inner and outer panels are joined together by hemming.
