Design of backdoor

OBJECTIVE

Use the provided styling surface and come up with a back door design using appropriate design methodologies, and provide necessary reinforcements and embosses.

DESIGN

The back door of the car is for the enclosed space (boot) to hold the luggage. There are three types of back doors based on their opening.

  • Top-mounted opening
  • Side-mounted opening
  • Bottom mounted opening

The door is mostly hinged and works either manually or powered electronically.

The components of the door designed are

  • Outer panel (upper, lower)

The outer panel is designed with appropriate space for fitting in the brake lights

Fig 2. Lower Outer Panel

  • Inner panel

The inner panel is mounted with the gas stay, wiper motor, hinges, latch, and striker reinforcements. Necessary embosses are added to strengthen the panel. A clearance of 25 mm is given for the sealant flanges to prevent the water from entering the car.

  • Gas stays reinforcements

Gas stay is used to lift the Tailgate. They work either manually or by a power lift system.

  • Hinge reinforcement

Essential in opening and closing the door while limiting the angle of rotation.

  • Wiper reinforcement

Wiper mounting is given to install the wiper motor which helps in cleaning the rear glass window for better visibility.

  • Latch and striker

The position of the latch and striker are to be perpendicular (90°) to the hinge for the door to open and close properly. The striker should be perpendicular to the door trajectory.

HEMMING

Since the back door is a styling body welding cannot be done to prevent un-aesthetic looks. So it is hemmed to join the inner and outer panels.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

The draft analysis resulted to be positive.

CONCLUSION

The back door was designed and thickened to about 0.75 mm thickness with the necessary reinforcements using Siemens NX software.
