Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Question
Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
Answers
#1
Default settings of EV_defaults_in.

Drive cycle used is CYC_FTP with 10 number of cycles.

Simulation results is as follows,

On a full charge battery and with the default condition settings and the CYC_FTP drive cycle the vehicle can travel a distance of 48.2 km till the battery state of charge becomes 0.
Now cargo mass increased to 500kg from the default 136kg,

The new simulation results is as follows,

The new simulations results shows that with the cargo mass increased to 500kg, the vehicle cannot cover the target distance of 45 km and can only cover a distance of 41.4 km with a fully charged battery.
#2
With increased battery capacity.
The number of modules of the battery has be increased from 25 to 28 modules, this change also resulted in the increase in total mass by 33kg and the nominal voltage from 308V to 345V.

The simulation results are as follows,

The new results shows that with the increase in battery module from 25 to 28, the vehicle is now capable of covering a distance of 46.3 km with a cargo mass of 500 kg. The target distance was 45 km and it can travel 1.3 km more.
#3
Gradeability test with the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.
The deafult settings is used to run the simulation.

The grade test options used is shown below,

The basic parameter is set to speed and duration, the solution condition is given by the lower and upper bound of the grade which is set to 0 and 50 respectively. This allows the gradeability to be calculated for the set speed and duration.
The test is done for a duration of 30 seconds at a constant speed of 10 mph, 20 mph, 30 mph, 40 mph, 50 mph and 60 mph. The gradeability at each speed is then obtained as the result of the simulation.
Gradeability simulation results,

At 10 mph, the gradeability is 34.2%

At 20 mph, the gradeability is 23.3%

At 30 mph, the gradeability is 18.5%

At 40 mph, the gradeability is 15.3%

At 50 mph, the gradeability is 13.1%

At 60 mph, the gradeability is 11.3%
Conclusion,
The different speeds and the respective gradeability for a duration of 30 seconds has been tabulated as shown below,

It can be observed from the above table that the gradeability of the vehicle decreases with increase in its speed.
