Benchmarking

BENCHMARKING

Benchmarking involves a structured comparison between similar products, services or processes on some dimensions of performance. For example it can be used to compare the availability and delivery of features in a product and in this form often provides the basis of consumer tests and reviews. These look at products and services and provide recommendations based on which is best or some form of ranking amongst competitors.

Benchmarking in automotive sector is done at two levels, as follows

Benchmarking 1: At this stage comparison is made at vehicle level, i.e what features are going to be added or discarded by comparing with the previous generations and the competitors vehicle.

Benchmarking 2: This is the detailed benchmarking of benchmarking 1,

Where the comparison is made at part levels. The comparison is basically made with the previous generations of the vehicle with the alternative available offered by the competitors in the market.

For Example, in the designing of the Tail Gate of a car, a detailed comparison should be made with the Tail Gate of the Previous generations of the car and also the alternative vehicle offered by the competitors in the same segment.

Whilst if offers a significant learning opportunity benchmarking between competing organizations is harder than the other three because competitors do not want to disclose their process information since it is a source of competitive advantage to them.So benchmarking of this kind often involves a third party who can collect the data, make the comparison and provide feedback but all on a confidential basis.
