Benchmarking:

Benchmarking is a process of comparison of products based on common or similar parameters. The best performance of a certain product on a specific parameter will then be regarded as the benchmark performance or score for that specific parameter for that category of product. The benchmark score can be used as an unofficial standard against which others may be measured or judged.

In the automotive industry Benchmarking is done as a pre-study to analyze the position of the designed concept within the market. Parameters like the competition's cost, impact, specifications, and features are commonly assessed. Benchmarking enables fine-tuning the concept to ensure success.

Derived from the problem, the following points are salient:

  1. Considering the overall cost in the long run and the frequent long drives, it is necessary to consider but not limit to a Diesel engine.
  2. Manual transmission should be considered due to cost constraints.

The following table compares 5 vehicles on common parameters.

Conclusions :

The comparison list has evident front runners in the Tata Nexon and Kia Sonet. Further review and finalization must be done after test-driving all these cars. Based on peer reviews the Tata Nexon should be preferred as it offers a better safety rating than the Kia Sonet, however the Xuv 300 fares better in the Safety Indexes.

Final verdict :

Opt for Kia Sonet.

This car has the better features of all the cars compared and more.
