Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design
CASING DESIGN
OBJECTIVE
The main objective to design this is to familiar with different tools in NX CAD
software and what the process we are going to follow to get our output.
Introduction
Here we are going to convert a solid body into sheet metal using NC CAD software by using different tools and finally we are going to draft the file in a 2D format.
DESIGN METHODOLGY

Tools
sketch
It is the basis of a 3D model. You can create on any plane.
Tab
It create a base feature by extruding a sketch along a vector by a thickness value or adds material to a planer face.
It adds a flat flange at an angle to a planer face and adds a bend between the two.
Normal cutout
It cuts material by projecting a sketch onto the model and then cutting perpendicular to the faces intersected by the projection.
Break corner
It rounds or chamfer the sharp corner of a tab or flange.
Unbend
It flattens a bend and the material adjacent to the bend.
Re bend
It restores the an unbend feature to its original bent state.
Hole
It adds a hole one or more in a solid body.
Dimple
It lifts an area of the model inside a sketch that simulates a stamping tool.
Bead
It lifts the material along the counter of a sketch that simulates a stamping tool.
Flat Pattern
It creates flat pattern from the formed sheet metal part.
Procedure
- Open NXCAD and create a new model .
- Crate a sketch in a XY plane , draw a rectangle centered at origin give the dimensions and exit the sketch.
- Create a solid sheet by using “Tab” tool and give thickness.
- Create a sketch on that body, draw a rectangle and create a rectangular hole by Normal cutout option.
- Draw sketch on same plane and draw two symmetrical lines and by choosing bend option and bend the body with the angle of 90 degrees.
- Now add flanges to the edges and break the sharp corners by choosing break corner option.
- Undend the body by choosing unbend option and adds 4 holes by sketching 4 points.
- Create cross sketch on xy plane give the dimensions and add the dimple by applying dimple tool and create a studio spline on that sketch.
- Click on move curve icon and select the spline and select the motion option angle and give 45 degree and add the dimple to that sketch.
- Create circle on xy plane and add beads to 4 corners click on bead icon.
- Click on rebend option and rebend the faces.
- Under flat pattern menu click on flat pattern and this will create flat pattern version of our sheet.
- Expand the model view tree and double click on flat pattern and create a new draft file of size A4.

conclusion
Finally we convert a solid body into sheet metal using NC CAD software by using different tools and we draft the file in a 2D format.
