Before starting your journey, knowing how well you are prepared is essential. But how to know whether you have what it takes to reach the destination? This is where an assessment plays an important role.
To measure your level of preparedness, you should have a crystal clear idea about your strengths and weaknesses. An assessment will reveal what you already have or need to acquire to perform a task or reach a destination.
An assessment may be a test or a process depending on the purpose. A common assessment test conducted during an interview is to spot the right talent for a particular job. Some assessments are done on a larger group of candidates to shortlist the finalists. On the other hand, certain competitive exams like IES, GATE, TANCET, etc evaluate your subject knowledge.
Be it for any purpose, an assessment is your chance to prove your skills. But certain chances don't come often, and you cannot take them for granted. A poorly performed assessment can have a long-term impact on your credibility. It is important to do things right in the first place and self-assessment is the primary step in preparing yourself.
Without a test, no one can be evaluated and rewarded. The tests are conducted to motivate the learner to widen their knowledge base. It's hard to push someone without a target. The aim to score high will motivate you to understand the subjects.
Your assessment scores are proof of your understanding of the concepts. To evaluate the skills of a large group of students in an unbiased manner, the education system conducts continuous assessments for learners. This process rewards toppers for their consistent efforts to finish the program in time with flying colors.
Primarily the education system ranks you based on the scores.
But a job interview is different. Here you are not assessed on what you have gained from a standard set of books. You are evaluated across multiple aspects, including your resilience, confidence level, domain knowledge, personality, attitude and aptitude.
A job interview is the critical mode of assessment in the hiring process. It is often conducted in a series of rounds to determine the full range of a candidate’s skills. Recruiters frame questions for each round based on the roles and responsibilities of the position. An engineering skills assessment test may entail technical and non-technical questions to validate your technical and soft skills.
Einstein’s famous words, 'A fish cannot be judged by its ability to climb a tree' applies to job interviews as well. For different designations and categories of candidates, recruiters plan the interview process.
The questions for an experienced candidate will differ from those asked to a fresher for the same technical round. Some companies like TCS, CTS and Infosys conduct bulk hiring for freshers through a common aptitude test. But the same companies will skip the aptitude round while hiring seasoned professionals for managerial roles and assess them based on their previous roles and experience.
Doing some groundwork before appearing for an interview is necessary. Most face-to-face interviews start with a question on self-introduction. It is to understand how well you present yourself as an able individual and professional.
Here are some tips for your preparation strategies.
