Computational Mechanics in Europe

logo

Skill-Lync

For the past few decades, the lines between various disciplines like engineering, computer science and mathematics have been growing increasingly blurred. New fields are evolving which seem to connect the existing unrelated fields in way unthought-of before. One such area is the area of Computational Mechanics. It trains its learners to utilize models and algorithms to experiment procedures computationally. Computational mechanics bridges across three subjects:

The presence of the powerful computers is moving the industries of the 21st century towards a future where all industrial procedures can be made more dependent on computational systems rather than being operated manually. This is considered favorable as it reduces the chances of man-made mistakes from happening and saves manpower. In some cases, it also helps manufacturers to save time and money.

Here is a list of universities in Europe that offer masters in Computational Mechanics:

Ingolstadt University of applied sciences – Germany

Course offered: M.Eng Applied Computational Mechanics

This course teaches the students to use numerical solution methods and professional software tools while providing basic knowledge of Mathematics and physics. The students gain interdisciplinary expertise along with modeling and technical competence.

The research centre on the University called “CARISSMA” is focused on many areas in terms of research related to computational and engineering. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to research (areas include vehicle mechatronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering). Some of the labs located at Ingolstadt University where research is carried out by CARISSMA include:

  • Simulation Laboratory
  • Hardware-in-the-loop Laboratory (HIL)
  • Car2X laboratory
  • Outdoor Test Facility

Technical University of Munich – Germany

Course offered: Master´s Program Materials Science and EngineeringMaster’s Aerospace and Master’s in Mechatronics and Robotics

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at TUM does not offer a direct specialized masters in Computational Mechanics. However, it offers some courses that cover the areas included in Computational Mechanics such as FEA, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, numerical methods etc.

You can refer to these snapshots from the university’s page (as of February 20, 2019) explaining the course content for clarification:

Master´s Program in Materials Science and Engineering:

Master’s Aerospace:

Master’s in Mechatronics and Robotics:

Research centres at TUM:

  • The Munich School of Engineering (MSE) is acts as an Integrative Research Centre and works on research projects related to energy generation, electromobility etc.
  • The Leonhard Obermeyer Center (LOC) is an interdisciplinary research center that experiments across various fields such as Numerical methods, Building Information Modeling, Computer-Aided Architectural design etc.

RWTH – Germany

Course offered: M.Sc in Computational Engineering Science

The course offered at RWTH primarily focuses on teaching the graduates to solve complex problems while providing a detailed understanding of the underlying theory. Some of the research centers at RWTH that work on projects related to Computational Engineering are:

Related courses:

Swansea – Wales, UK

Courses offered: M.Sc in Computational Mechanics

In this course, your general knowledge of the theory of Computational mechanics will be developed while teaching the latest numerical and computational methods to simulate industrial problems. Swansea University focuses largely on the subject of the Finite Element Method.

The Zienkiewicz Center for Computational Engineering at Swansea University is the leading UK Center for Computational Engineering. FEM was developed at Swansea in 1967 by Professor Olek Zienkiewicz, known as the “father of Finite Element Method”. He was a professor at Swansea University who has written the major journal in the field of Numerical Computations.

Other related courses:

University of Duisburg – Essen – Germany

Course offered: M.Sc in Computational Mechanics

The study of Computational Mechanics at the University of Duisburg involves four elements: Model building, Algorithms, Experiments, and Applications. The course is accredited by ASIIN. The University houses CCSS – Centre for Computational Sciences and Simulation to research on the subject. It also retains an Interdisciplinary Center for Educational Research where scientists come together from various disciplines to discuss and work on new projects.

Related Courses –

Universitat Politéchnica de Catalunya – Spain

Course offered – Master’s in Computational Mechanics

This is an Erasmus Mundus program offered in collaboration with several other universities. The course aims at training students in modelling, formulating, analyzing and implementing simulation tools to solve complex engineering problems. Some of the research groups and research labs at UPC dedicated to Computational Engineering research include:

Related courses:

École Centrale de Nantes – France

Course offered: M.Eng in Computational Mechanics

This program teaches how to model and perform numerical simulation on fluid and solid mechanical systems, no matter how complex they are. By the end of the program, graduates would have mastered performing mathematical analysis on models and approximation methods.

Some of the research institutes and labs that work in areas related to computational mechanics include:

  • Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering (GeM)
  • High-Performance Computing Institute (ICI)
  • Jean Leray Mathematical Institute
  • MS Research group – Modelling and Simulation
  • METHRIC Research Group – Modelling of Incompressible Turbulent Flows at High Reynolds numbers and Couplings

Related course – M.Sc Computational Mechanics

Since the industry is moving in the direction of computational power, academia is now training its students to move with the industry. However, not many universities offer Computational mechanics even though the demand is high for engineers who specialize in Computational Mechanics. Hence, if you are a mechanical engineer planning to enter this field, this is the right time for you as it seems extremely promising in the near future.

Happy Learning!
