Challenge

Wiring harness design in CATIA V5 - 3D modeling Week 7 Challenge

Q1. Flatten the harness assembly completed in the “ week 4 challenge”. Place the flattened view on the drawing sheet. Ensure bundles with protective coverings has different visuals on the drawing view.

OBJECTIVE:

  • To flatten the wire harness assembly completed in the week 4 assignment.
  • To orient the wire bundle as shown in the layout.
  • To place the flattened view on a drawing sheet.
  • To ensure bundles with protective coverings has different visuals on drawing view.

SOLUTION METHODOLOGY:

Step - 1:

Create a product file and navigate to the Electrical Harness Flattening option for wire harness flattening. Save the product file in the same location as the wire harness or routing assembly.

In order to flatten the required wire harness assembly, define the 'Harness flattening parameters.'

To differentiate between the wire bundle and cot tubes in drafting, a single line is selected for bundle segment and a double line is selected for protective coverings when defining the harness flattening parameters in the drawing menu.

Step - 2:

Select the Geometric bundle product in the wire harness assembly product file and select the 'Extract' option from the Electrical Harness flattening workbench.

The wire harness assembly is then imported into the Wire flattening product file, with the 'EHF' extension appended to the name of the geometric bundle assembly.

Step - 3:

To flatten the wire harness assembly, select the 'Flatten' option.

Then select the active plane, then any one branch, and finally ‘select all branches.'

If there is no discontinuity in the bundle segment, all branches are selected, and the wire harness assembly is flattened by pressing 'ok.'

Before Flattening.

Step - 4:

Use 'Rotate' and other commands to rotate the branches and align them according to the layout.

After Flattening and rotating to a particular angle.

Step - 5:

Save the product file with the 'Save management' option to keep all related product files and part files in a single directory.

FOR DRAFTING:

  • Create a new drawing file and save it in the same location.
  • Insert the title block template and fill in the blanks.
  • Add the front view of the harness assembly by selecting one of the connector's flat faces and orienting the view as needed.
  • To see the Wire bundle, connectors, and protection coverings properly, go to the view's properties and turn on the '3D Wireframe' and 'Is always visible' options.
  • In the form of a table, show, and name all of the parts used in the wire harness assembly.

CONCLUSION:

We learned how to flatten a given wire harness assembly and then place the flattened view on a drawing sheet to show all of its components from the previous assignment.
