Connector Definitions - Wiring Harness Design

WIRING HARNESS DESIGN

What is Wiring Harness?

A wiring harness is one of the most essential parts of the vehicle industry. A wiring harness is an organized set of wires, terminals and connectors that run throughout the entire vehicle and transmit information and electric power, thereby playing a critical role in “connecting” a variety of components. Power and information travel through this network much like the circulatory and central nervous systems of the human body. It conducts electricity for all electrical loads on a vehicle.

Wiring Harness Assembly Structure - Connector Definition

The Assembly structure is followed as

1. Creating/Downloading Connector 3D data (From TE website)

2. Creating required Geometrical Parameters

3. Defining part as "connector"

4. Defining "Bundle Connection Point"

5. Defining "Connector Connection Point"

6. Defining "Cavity Connection Point"

in this challenge, we are going to first set up the geometrical parameters for the given cad models which are connectors and a connector clip.

Setting up Geometrical Parameters

C-DT06-08SA Connector

2-174357-2 Female Connector

85229-1 Cavity (Connector Clip)

After setting up the geometrical parameters for the given parts we need to define them electrically with the help of "Electrical Part Design Workbench".

Defining Connector

Defining "Bundle Connection Point"

Defining "Connector Connection Point"

Similarly, We need to define electrical properties to other connectors & clips as well.

Since the other female connector has the provision to connect a clip, we need to define "Cavity Connection Point" to that part & clip.

Additionally, we can also create a catalogue for storing these connectors & clips as it will help other routing engineers to use them directly without setting up the parameters & defining them to electrical parts for routing.

New Catalogue File Creation as Connectors

Storing Electrically Defined Connector

Once all the parts are electrically defined, we can assemble them using the "Electrical Assembly Design" workbench.

Note: we only had female connectors given in the challenge hence I have additionally downloaded a suitable male connector for completing the assembly.
