Wiring harness design in CATIA V5 - 3D modeling Week 2 Challenge

  • WIRING HARNESS DESIGN

Objective:

Download following connectors & Connector clip cad data from given link & define it as Electrical Connector using Electrical Part design Workbench. Define all the necessary properties to Connectors & Clip.

Terminologies & Definitions:

  1. Electrical Distribution System (EDS)- Electrical Distribution system basically deals with Physical & Logical Architecture, Schematic Development, Power distribution, Wiring harness Design, Wiring harness component design of given Electrical system.
  2. E&E Architecture- It is high level logical connectivity diagram represents the number of Systems, Sub-Systems and logical connectivity between them. It is also extended to show the CAN network between different Electronic controllers.
  3. Logical Schematics - Logical schematic is detailed design of E&E Architecture which is extended to show the logical connectivity between different components & controls of given system, Sub-system.
  4. Electrical Schematics- Electrical schematic is detail design of Logical schematics which describes the pin to pin connectivity, Properties,Fusing distribution, Grounding distribution, Interconnects, Wire properties, Circuit properties, Specification of components etc. This is the end result of Electrical core design of system and used as an primary input for harness development.
  5. Wiring harness Topology- Wiring harness Topology is strategy to divide or Split the harness between different pieces to achieve the bestManufacturability, Serviceability & Cost effective design.
  6. Wiring harness Routing- Wiring harness routing deals with desired path of wiring harness into given vehicle environment by applying set of design rules & industry best practices.
  7. Wiring harness Packaging- Wiring harness packaging deals with Fixing/Mounting strategy of wiring harness routing to ensure the safe,Reliable & Durability of wiring harness by applying set of design rules & industry best practices.

Connector definition:

  1. Geometry Parameters- Points & Co-ordinate system (Axis).
  2. Connector connection points- This point is used for the connection of one connector to another connector.
  3. Harness bundle entry point- This point defines where the harness bundle segment point will end when routed to the electrical connector.
  4. Cavity connection point- This point is used to define the connection of a connector to a connector clip. This only applies to connectors which have the mounting feature for a connector clip.

  • Connector connection point:

This point is used to define the connection of a connector to a connector clip. This only applies to connectors which have the mounting feature for a connector clip.

  • Create axis system:

  • Bunddle connection point:

  • Switch to 'Electric Part Design:

Define the part as a connector in electrical part workbench, give termination as 8 as we have 8 entry points of wire.

  • Define bunddle connection point:

  • Define connector connection point:

2.Tyco 174352-2:

  • Create midpoint
  • Create connector connection point
  • Create connector connection axis system
  • Create cavity connection point
  • Create cavity connection axis system
  • Switch to electric part design & define parts as connector
  • Define connector connection point & cavity connection point.

3.Tyco 85229-1:

  • Create midpoint
  • Create cavity connection point
  • Create cavity connection axis system
  • Switch to electric part design
  • Define part as cavity & mounting equipment.
  • Define cavity connection point.

Electrical assembley workbench:

  • Import Connectors and cavity mounting clip
  • Select Electrical connection
  • Select Connector then cavity
