Hood design-Week 2
HOOD
A hood also referred to as a bonnet used to provide Pedestrian saftey as well as engine saftey. It is mounted over a front-engine vehicle via hing. Its purpose is to provide access to the engine for repair and maintenance.
It considered as another door in a vehicle, helps to desipate energy outside the car body.

- Material
Car hoods are typically constructed from steel and sometimes from aluminum.
- Components
- Hing: A a component, mount on a hood to provide rotation with respect to its own axis.
- Striker: It is on front location of the hood joined with latch to lock the next part in the way that it would not release it untill a human open it. And in some cars there is a mechanism facility of primarily opening of hood, below driver seat (sometimes sensors and sometimes lever) it opens the hood approx to the finger size about 10-15 mm so that driver could pull it up smoothly without applying so much effort.
- Inner panel: Used to provide strength.
- Outer panel: Work as metal cover to protect engine from external elements.
- Stiffner: stiffner is a kind of foam what we place in between outer and inner panel of hood to eleminate noises during vibration when car moves.
Mastic seal: Mastic Seal is an alternative of Foam stiffner instead of using foam we use Hard Rubber, which is also for NVH purpose.
Trajectory
It is defined as, the path followed by an object when it thrown in space.
Here, the latch trajectory must be 90 degree to the normal of hinge axis so that latch could lock without hiting any surrounding parts.

Emboss
Embossing is a stamping process which is used for giving sheet metal some useful shape.
For creating emboss we need to insert sheet metal in to the roller die which has already some set of pattern in it,will give desired out put metal sheet.

Deep-Drawing
It is also one of the sheet metal forming process where sheet metal radially punch into the die to get desired shape. It gives high precisions and high production volume. Coldrink canes and similar products are best examples for deep drawing.

Hemming
Hemming is also one of the sheet metal forming process in which sheet metal joined by bending it to 180 degree or it must be parallel to the other surace which is to be joined.Automotive doors, hoods are examples of hemming process.

Hood stay
It is a support rod helps to make hood stay at one position for repair and maintenance of engine. It halso helps to change the angle of opening of hood.
some times we use Gas stay instead of support rod.
At the time of moving vehicle it is important for us a designer that there must be enough clearence b/w hood stand & other elements so that they could not collide together.
