Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Let's Calculate & decide by given design whether it passes the European standards or not.

• Design

• European Regulations Requirement:

1. Draw the sketch of lines on wheel at specified angle as shown in fig.
2. Make the centre of the wheel circle.
3. Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle by construction line.
4. Draw lines at 30 degrees and 50 degrees from the centre.
5. Make a point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal or directly input the angle values by using mathematical operations.
6. Then make a line that is exactly between the 50-degree line and the line made on the 150mm point.
7. Exit work bench and by selecting 3D intersection command and using 3D point command specify the points at top and bottom most curve of tire and fender respectively.

• Now,Measure the horizontal distances or clearence ' L' between points on the top most of the wheel and bottom most of the fender curve. All of these should be greater or equal to 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
• Check whether the design passes these conditions and conclude whether it can pass the European Regulations Requirement at sections SA, SB,SC,SD & SE.

Now,let's determine the clearence values at different predefined locations.

Distance between SA point and fender outer curve = 9.941 mm (Fail)

Distance between SB point and fender outer curve = 10 mm (pass)

Distance between SC point and fender outer curve = 0.234 mm (Fail)

Distance between SD point and fender outer curve = 4.568 mm (Fail)

Distance between SE point and fender outer curve =9.563 mm (Fail)

Conclusion:

The given design satisfies European standards only at point SB where as other points i.e. SA and SE are quite less but,SD and SC are way below to the recommended 10 mm minimum distance. Therefore, this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be send back to the styling team to modify the design and increase the gap.
