Week 9- Unsteady moving zones Approach

AIM: To Simulate the motion of blades in a generic turbomachinery component using an unsteady approach.

Objectives:

  • Assume blade rotation at 300rpm
  • Choose an appropriate time step for the simulation and generate an animation file for the rotation.

Procedure:

Read the mesh into the Fluent Setup. Imported the given case files using Append tool. So all the case files are imported, and the final model is shown in the fig.

Here, the model consists of 11 blades having cord length of 0.6m and spaced at an angle of 32.7 degrees. And the model contains inlet, outlet, rotating domain, rotating frame.

Simulation setup:

General:

  • solver type: Pressure-based
  • Velocity Formulation: Absolute
  • Time: Transient
  • 2D space: Planar

Viscous model:

Material:

Cell zone conditions:

There are three cell zones in the model Geometry.

  1. rotating_frame
Here, the cell zone is defined as Frame motion type with a Relative velocity of 300rpm.
  2. Fixed_frame
  3. surface_body

Boundary Conditions:

Here, the inlet is pressure inlet type and the outlet is the pressure outlet type. And the surface body are taken as walls. And the domain frame as interface to set as interface between two surfaces for the fluid flow. Also, the airfoil is set up as moving walls of relative velocity 300rpm.

Solution Methods:

Calculation:

Initialization method: Hybrid

And the calculation is taken at a time step of 0.0002sec, and maximum iterations per time step is taken as 50, and Number of time steps is taken as 1000.

And also created solution animation for velocity contour and the results are shown below.

Results:

velocity contour:

This, simulation results high velocity at the leading edges of the airfoil and the outlet of the model as shown in fig.

Pressure contour:
