Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Tension Test and Torsion test challenge:

Aim:

To perform the tension and torsion test on the given model to find out the total deformation,Equivalent stress and Temperature.

Objective:

For this challenge, you will have to perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided below the video corresponding to the challenge.

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. You will need to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach appropriate images to show your results.

For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach images to show your results.

Procedure:

  • Firstlyopen ANSYS workbench software.
  • Select explicit dynamics from the analysis system.
  • And then import the geometry from the system files.

  • Create a explicit material of steel 1066 from the engineering data.

  • Create Individual co-ordinate for the model as follows.

  • Then we proceed for meshing firstly create a patch conforming method as tetrahedrons.
  • Then create a face sizing for the two sides as below with type as Sphere of influence with sphere radious of 22mm and element size as 3mm.

  • Finally after meshing the image is as follows.

  • After then in analysis settings assign the no of steps as 1 with an end time as 1e-3.

Tension Test:

  • For tension test we need to assign a displacement of 18mm at one end as below

  • And create a fixed support at one end as below.

  • And finally we need to get the solution for
  1. Total deformation
  2. Equivalent stress
  3. User defined Result(Temp)

Result:

Tension Test:

Total Deformation:

Maximum- 18.005 mm

Minimum- 0

Equivalent stress:

Maximum- 578.13 mpa

Minimum- 0

User defined result(temp):

Maximum- 274.61 'c

Minimum- 22 'c

Torsion Test:

  • For Torsion test we need to create an extra co-ordinate system in cylindical types as below

  • And for meshing we need to create another face sizing at two faces as mentioned below with an element size as 1.5 mm.

  • And create another face sizing at trhe center with sphere of influence with a radius of 8mm and element sizeas 1mm.

  • The meshed image is as follows

  • we need to create a displecment based upon the newly generated co-ordinate system.
  • We need to assign a degree of roration along Y-axis for 1200'.

Result:

Torsion Test:

Total Deformation:

Maximum- 12.706 mm

Minimum- 0

Equivalent stress:

Maximum- 518.98 mpa

Minimum- 0

User defined result:

maximum- 434.6 'c

Minimum- 22'c

Tabular data:

Total Deformation(mm) Equivalent stress(mpa) User Defined result(Temp)

Max Min Max Min MAx MIn

Tension test 18.005 0 578.13 0 274.16 22

Torsion test 12.706 0 518.98 0 434.36 22

Conclusion:

From the above tabular data we got to know that toatl deformation and equivakent stress is higher for tension test than that of torsion test while temperature is high for torsion test than a that of tension test.
