Week 9 - Project - Master Section Development

Week-9 Master Section Development

Aim: To create the B pillar class B and Class C surface and form a closed body along with this, we have to create the dog house, screw boss and ribs for support in the B Pillar using Catia V5.

Objective: To understand the Master Section and creating the required features according to the given master section using generative shape designing and part designing features of Catia V5 and performing draft analysis.

Software and features of the software required

Catia V5, Generative Shape Designing and part designing.

Design Methodology and Requirements:

Parts to create:

  • B Surface of the given A surface
  • C Surface
  • Closed Body
  • Dog House
  • Screw Boss
  • Ribs

Design Methodology:

First of all, the tooling direction is created and the given Class A surface is extracted and then it is offset to 2.5mm to create the B Surface. After the offset, the B surface is extrapolated and improved to avoid patches,

The A surface is joined and the boundary for A surface is created, which is Sweep at 3-degree angle towards outside and intersecting the Class B Surface

Finally, with the help of trim operation a closed surface is form and then it is converted to solid body.

Once the Closed body is created, draft analysis is done along the tooling direction.

Through the draft analysis, we know that the parts have the angle greater than 3 degrees, the blue parts have angle between 0 to 3 degree and the red parts have the angle less than 0 degree.

Once the Close body is done, we create the dog house following the master section given the design considerations with a draft of 0.5 degree.

A separate tooling axis is created for dog house for the draft analysis of dog house. Once, one dog house is created at one side, it is copied and paste with a link and then it translated to the other side as direct translation leads to the displacement of the original feature.

Draft Analysis of Dog House

Draft Analysis at 1.45-degree angle

Draft Analysis at 3-degree angle

Draft analysis when the undercutting are also drafted to 0.5 degree

Red – Less than 0 degree

Blue- 0-3 degree

Green- Greater than 3 degrees

Finally, the ribs are created to support the closed body and the 3 faces are drafted to 0.5 degree.

Conclusion: Through this project, we learned to create the parts with the help of master sections and form the desired model.
