Challenge

Week 9 - Parametric study on Gate valve.

Introduction

A gate valve, also known as sluice valve is a valve that opens by lifting a barrier(gate) out of the path of the fluid. gate valves require very little space along the pipe axis and hardly restrict the flow of fluid when the gate is fully opened. the gate faces can be parallel but are most commonly wedge-shaped (in order to be able to apply pressure on the ceiling surface).

Parametric study

One of the best ways to get value out of your simulation is to do parametric analysis. With very little marginal work a completed model can be parametrized to simulate scenarios limited only by your computational time and resources.

As you move forward in your design, you can access the impact that changing certain parameters can have on the design. The parameters can include dimensional parameters parametric study allows you to nominate parameters for evaluation, define the parameter range, specify the design constraints and analyze the results of each parameter variation.

Setup

  1. The solver type is provided with the pressure based> absolute> steady state> gravity enabled> z direction -9.81m/s^2, as the general setting.
  2. The viscous model as the k-omega< RNG< swirl dominating flow.
  3. Material as the water under fluid and delete the air ( but need to change the material from cell zone first ).
  4. Boundary condition inlet – pressure type= gauge pressure =10Pa (here we are not going to create the parametric group as the inlet pressure is going to be same for all the cases.
  5. Outlet pressure based =zero gauge pressure.
  6. Here under definition create the parameter to generate the plot for the mass flow rate
  7. Initialize the solution with the hybrid initialization.

Conclusion - Parametric study is a form of optimization where the user can run a series of analyses to investigate the impact of one or more processing parameter. For each parameter, any number of values can be selected for investigation. Each analysis is one possible combination of the parameter values chosen to be compared.

Here with the parametric study for the gate valve opening and further with this the calculation of mass flow rate also the animation of the particular case is the new learning.

In the fluent for any particular study of any model it is necessary to run the same model under different inlet boundary condition, doing this changes manually takes a lot of time thus parametric study helps in saving the time for such type of study.
