Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation - Challenge 2

AIM: Create the Dog House for the Door Trim considering the design rules mentioned in the video. Consider the thickness of the part to be 2.5 mm.

THEORY: Dog house is an engineering feature used in plastic trim design. Dog houses are used as supporting feature. Sometimes other engineering features like snaps; locators etc. are mounded on them to increase their strength. Dog houses are subjected to draft analysis to prevent breakage of the component during ejection from mould cavity. Dog house and other engineering components are built on B-surface.

where, "C" is where the doghouse contacts the backside of the surface.

  • Doghouse wall thickness at the intersection of the part wall ( C ) should be 40% or less than the main wall stock ( T ).

  • The height of ( B ) should be between 3.0 – 6.0 mm

PROCEDURE:

GIVEN: The class A surface,

STEP 1: Create a Tooling Axis, as shown below.

STEP 2: Perform Draft analysis on the given class A surface.

From the above results, we can observe that there are some elements which do not clear the required draft. Since it is an A Class Surface it is suggested to inform the A Class Surface designing team about the same, and get it corrected.

STEP 3: Create a B Class Surface at an offset of 2.5 mm. We observe surface gaps in the offset. so work on the surfaces and ensure that there is no gap in the class B surfaces so that the surface is achieved as below.

STEP 4: create C class surface by, first extracting the edges from the Class A surface with the help of the multi extract or boundary command which we create the path for a sweep for class C.

STEP 5: Join the Class C with Class A.

STEP 6: Trim the joined class A and C with Class B to obtain a closed surface.

STEP 6: Convert the hollow part into solid.

STEP 7: perform draft analysis.

STEP 8: Now, we create the dog house on the B surface side of the component. It is done by considering the rules as mentioned in the theory. First, Extract the surface on which we want to create the dog house and create a sketch on a plane. Create the sketch, and pad as per the guidlines. Similarly perform another dog house on the 2nd extract. Union Trim the dog house with the door trim. By doing so, we will obtain the model as follows.

STEP 9: perform draft analysis on the body.

Thus from the draft analysis we can observe that the part is ok for manufacturing.

VIEWS:

RESULT: Hence, the dog house for the door trim was created by considering the design rules, and the Draft analysis performed on the final component is successfully done.
