Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation - Challenge 1

AIM : To create Ribs Design of a Centre Console Coin Holder :-

Given Centre Console Coin Holder

RIBs

Ribs are thin wall structure which is provided for extra Stiffness & Strength in the mould without increasing the overall wall thickness of the component.

  • Ribs Design - always in B-surface
  • Located and arresting component of an assembly
  • providing allignment in mating parts.
  • Acting as Stop or Guides for mechanism.

Guidelines for RIBs design :-

  • Ribs Draft Angle = 0.5 degree per side (minimum)
  • Ribs Thickness = 0.4*t (where t=thickness of material) Minimum Thickness = 0.75mm (Top edge)
  • Ribs Height = < 5t
  • Fillet Radius = 0.25mm (maximum)

{ Eg- if Thickness of a surface (t) = 2.5mm

then Ribs thickness = 0.4*t = 0.4*2.5 = 1mm

Ribs Height = 5t = 5*2.5 = 12.5mm }

Proper Ribs Design involves :-

  • Thickness
  • Height
  • Location
  • Quantity / No. of Ribs
  • Manufacturability

Procedure:-

  • Extract the surface to create the Ribs.
  • use Positional sketch to create a line.

  • Extrude the line accordiing to the Ribs Designing rule.ie, Thickness =1 mm and height = 12.5mm

  • Make the solid profile by using Part Design - Thick surface

  • now, apply the Draft angle =0.5degree on all side face of solid profile.

  • Measure the Top edge = 0.75mm or more than this

  • Apply Fillet radius = 0.25mm

  • Assemble this solid body in main part ie; coin Holder body

(Ribs Root Thickness)

  • use Intersect the body in XY-plane

  • use Tritangent Circle - element= create extract

  • for proper circle; use Tools - Option - decrease 3D proportionaly limit 0.01mm

(We got proper Rib which follows our designing rule)

Creating another Ribs

Two Ribs are having certain distance gap between each other.

Eg-

if Height = 12.5mm

Y/X = 3 mm

so, X = Y/3 = 12.5/3 = 4.16 ie; (5mm acceptable)

so, Offset Distance between Two Ribs = 5mm

Repeat the above steps to get Second Ribs -

  • Offset (5mm) - Extrude - Insert body - Thick Solid surface - Draft - Fillet angle

  • Check Intersection again for spacing/gap

Draft Analysis

The axis along which Core-Covity; Opening/Closing takes place.

  • Draft analysis of the coin solid body along tooling axis
  • Draft angle = 3degree

  • For clearing surface of Ribs, create a dummy axis on ribs along X-direction.
