Challenge

Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

Objective: In this challenge, we are going to perform the transient structural analysis on the Worm Gear Assembly.

We are trying to refine the mesh ( Keeping the node count below 31K) and analyze the Equivalent Stress, Equivalent Strain, and Total Deformation.

Geometry: The assembly has two parts 1) Worm and 2) Gear.

For analysis purpose, we have split the geometry. A geometry considered for analysis is shown below.

Material: We have used Structural Steel as Materia. The properties of it are shown below.

Contacts: We have provided Frictionless Contact between the worm teeth and gear teeth. We want to move the worm all over the gear hence we have selected all the teeth of the gear.

Joints: Aa both the parts are rotating, we have provided the Body-Ground Revolute joints to it.

Mesh: We have deployed the mesh with a global element size of 4mm and then we have given the face sizing of 2mm to all the faces which are coming into contact.

Analysis Settings: We are going to perform the analysis in 15 steps. with the following settings.

Boundary Conditions: We have applied the Joint load of rotation to the Worm. Total Rotation of 750 degrees is applied in 15 steps.

Results:

1) Total Deformation:

2) Equivalent Stress:

3) Equivalent Strain:

Conclusion:

Transient Structural Analysis is successfully performed on the worm and gear assembly without an error and results are given below.

Total Deformation 7.2938 mm
Equivalent Stress 2491.3 MPa
Equivalent Strain 0.01433 mm/mm
