Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Worm Gear - Simulation Using
ANSYS Workbench 2020 R2
Thejan Sasilal
OBJECTIVES
For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly. For the academic version, you need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits. For the challenge, you have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model. You can use a finer mesh while performing the challenge and submit a well formatted report with appropriate images.
- INTRODUCTION

In this challenge, we are simulating the Universal Joint to find out the transient structural abilities of the system.
- DESIGN SPECIFICATION
Assign Structural Steel as the materials for each geometry from engineering data.

- STATIC ANALYSIS
Open Mechanical modeler for analysis.
Consider all units are in metric.
Rename geometry as Driven Shaft, Drive Shaft, Joint 1, Joint 2 & Connecting Element respectively.

3.1 CONNECTIONS
3.1.1 CONTACTS
Select rename based on definition
- Select contacts and Targets as given below.

3.1.2 JOINTS
- Revolute - Ground To Worm Gear (Body-Ground)

- Revolute - Ground To Worm Shaft (Body-Ground)

3.2 MESH CREATION

3.3 ANALYSIS SETTINGS
- Consider following as the analysis settings for step-1

- Consider following as the analysis settings for step-2 to step-15

3.4 BOUNDARY CONDITION
Insert joint load
Select Revolute - Ground To Worm Shaft (Body-Ground) as joint. Consider the rotation as given below.

3.5 SOLUTIONS

RESULTS |
FINDING |
|
Equivalent stress |
|
Maximum stress develops at the root of the worm gear teeth. Stress developed at majority of the contact area is more than the yield strength of the structural steel. Recommend superior material for both the components. |
|
Equivalent elastic strain |
![]() |
More strain develops at the root of the worm gear tooth. |
|
Total deformation |
![]() |
- CONCLUSSION
Simulation of Worm Gear conducted with Ansys Workbench by considering structural steel as material. From the analysis it is found that stress is concentrating at the root of the worm gear wheel. It is not recommended to use structural steel as the MOC for the worm wheel.
