Week 8 - Challenge 4 - Coin Holder Design

Design and Draft analysis of a Coin Holder

Objectives:

a) To create the Class-B and Class-C surfaces from given Class-A surface of a coin holder.

b) To perform the draft analysis on Class-A surface and the solid body.

Draft analysis on Class-A surface:

To do the draft analysis, we need a tooling axis. The axis is created by bisecting method in general. For the given surface, a point is marked in the middle of the base plane. An axis system is set up on that point. Upon intersection of Z- plane with the surface we find one that one face is perpendicular to base. So the tooling axis in this case is a line perpendicular to base passing through the point.

The draft analysis is then performed in the following procedure:

a) Join the entire surface into a single one using 'Join' command.

b) Ensure that "Materials" option is selected in the View Mode customization option.

c) Select 'Feature draft analysis' in the Analysis option under "Insert" toolbar.

d) Select the compass option in the direction option and set its direction along the tooling axis.

e) Lock the orientation of compass and click anywhere on the surface to get the analysis of angles at various portions in form of colours.

The direction of the compass can be altered to get the positive draft on top of surface. Click "Ok" on the draft analysis box to save it.

Class-B surface creation:

This is created by extracting few sections at a time. The extracted sections are untrimmed and offseted according to the position on the class-A surface. The faces are then trimmed to form a single surface.

Class-C surface creation:

For the coin holder, the class-c surface is perpendicular to the tooling axis as shown below.

The outer boundary of the A surface is extracted. Then the surfaces supporting this outer boundary are extracted using multiple extract command. The C-surface is generated by "with reference surface" option in the "Sweep" command.

The C-surface is trimmed with the B-surface. The trimmed part is then joined with A-surface.

Ensuring that the surface has a closed boundary, it converted to solid object using 'Closed body' command.

Draft analysis of a closed body:

Draft analysis is done following same steps of Class-A surface.
