Challenge

Week 8 - Challenge 2 - Base Bracket Design

Objective: The main objective is to create draft analysis and Tooling direction for the given Class-A surface as a Base Bracket.

Draft analysis

A small draft angle is provided to each and every area of components in order to get easy removal of the components from the tool. The draft analysis technique is used to analyze whether our part model created in cad is manufacturable based on the draft condition applied.
The major consideration of draft analysis is whether a sufficient draft angle is provided on the components. components while designing should be provided with a considerable amount of draft angle depending on the manufacturing consideration. For plastic components provide a draft angle of 3 degrees ( draft angle of 0.5 is given ideally to the feature inside the plastic part). But for automotive sheet metal s, it will be from 7 degrees or more.

Procedure

CLASS A SURFACE

  • Firstly the given class A surface was imported to Catia v5, then check the irregularities were by using the Join command.

Tooling Direction

  • Create a point on class A surface for creating Dummy tooling Axis by using line command.
  • Using an Intersect command from generative shape design by selecting the ZY plane as the first element.
  • After creating the intersecting lines select the line command and join the vertices which show the most possible draft angle manufacturable and bisect those two lines over the axis points.
  • Select a bisecting line command to get the perfect tooling axis for manufacture.
  • .

Draft Analysis

  • After creating the tooling axis select draft analysis as Feature draft analysis option from the insert option, before going to that select customize view parameter in that select a Material condition.
  • Select the element to analyze, next select compass to define new current draft direction along with tooling axis and then lock option is used to check draft if it shows Green means its manufacturable or it has 3 degrees.
