Week 8 - Challenge 1 - Draft Analysis on a Fan Cover

Objective:

Create the tooling axis for the given Fan cover model meeting the requirements of the draft angle and perform the Draft analysis on the model.

Detailed Report:

  • Ensure the continuity of the given class A surface part:

At first, we have to ensure by using boundary command & join command in CATIA that given class A surface has properly joined or has some discontinuity in it. We can notice visually in the below image that, the highlighted green line shows the continuous boundary of part and there is no issue in joining also.

  • Now we have to check the continuity usually by extracting the boundary of the class A surface. As we can clearly that the given class A surface has continuity.

  • Tooling Axis Direction:

The tooling axis is a direction in which mould and cavity open. In this step, we have to decide the cooling axis direction. It will be done visually by analyzing the model in which direction will be suitable for the tooling axis. From the below image we can visualise the top surface has hole and cutouts are present at sides.

  • If you select X-direction and the Y-direction as a tooling axis as shown in the below images, then we should require a side core for top hole which increases mould cost.

  • But if we take the Z direction as the tooling axis, then there is no problem for clear the hole & it will also cost-saving process. We can see the below image.

  • Bisecting method to find real tooling axis:
  • We have to insert an axis system. Take the intersection of the ZX plane with class A surface. Then we will get the two curve as shown below figure.

  • Now we have to check that which surface will be problematic for tooling. There is no problem with the surface which are 90 degree to tooling axis. Therefore we have to check the surface which lies parallel to the tooling axis direction. For that we have to draw a line using point to point direction along the parallel surface. Here we get two lines now we have to bisect the two-line and choose a vertical direction. This will be our tooling axis for or X direction.

  • Similarly, we have to repeat the same procedure again by intersecting the YZ plane of the axis system of a Class A surface.

  • Now we have two axes. Tooling clearing X-axis & tooling clearing Y-axis. We will bisect this two axis to get our final tooling axis.

Draft analysis:

1) To perform draft analysis, go to Insert < Analysis < Feature draft analysis.

2) Before that switch customizes view parameter mode to the material.

3) Click on the compass icon & align it with the tooling axis & click on the surface, we will get our results.

  • In the above image, it is clear that the green surface 3 degree draft which mostly required for tolling feasibility.

A full analysis is shown below image.

Here we can also check the draft angle of the running point on the surface.
