Week 7-Long Piston With Cam
OBJECTIVE: To perform a transient analysis on a piston and cam mechanism model that has been provided for the 3 cases.
PROCEDURE:
- Drop Transient Structural
- Import the model
- Update the model
- Edit the model and open Mechanical module
- Rename the geometry
- Select the barrel and Barrel Cam and convert them to rigid bodies
- Select both the contacts and Flip target/contact
- Select both the contacts and apply frictionless
- Add the fixed joint for ground to Barrel
- Add revolute joint for ground to barrel cam
- Add translational joint for Barrel Cam to follower
- Generate the mesh as per requirement
- Add the Joint load for ground to Barrel cam
Analysis Settings:

CASE 1: Frictionless
Equivalent Stress:

Equivalent Strain:

Directional Deformation:

CASE 2: Friction - 0.1
Equivalent Stress:

Equivalent Strain:

Directional Deformation:

CASE 3: Friction - 0.2
Equivalent Stress:

Equivalent Strain:

Directional Deformation:

RESULT:
| CASE No. | Friction | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | Equivalent Strain (mm/mm) | Directional Deformation (mm) |
| 1 | 0 | 1331.8 | 0.0067364 | 10.881 |
| 2 | 0.1 | 1493.8 | 0.0075528 | 10.977 |
| 3 | 0.2 | 1788.6 | 0.0090197 | 11.086 |
Conclusion:
- Directional Deformation is highest for friction 0.2
- Equivalent Stress is highest for friction 0.2
- Equivalent Strain is highest for friction 0.2
- As the friction increses value of Stress, Directional Deformation and Strain increases
