Week-6 : Turbocharger Modelling

  • List down different TC and locate examples from GT Power

There are many specifications and sizes for a big range of turbo chargers, they are aparted as 3 big groups:

Fixed Geometry Turbocharger- This is the must simple form of turbochargers the geometry is fixed and e can`t control any parameter of this kind of turbocharger or compressor.

Wastegate turbocharger- the wastegate works as bypass valve. In this type of turbocharger, you can control by controlling the pressure the amount of exhaust gas going to the turbine. Due to this mechanism the speed of the turbine can be controlled and hence can be prevented to mechanical failure avoiding the hight speeds.

Variable Geometry Turbocharger or VGT- This is the advanced version of the turbocharger and hence most costly. nut also the most effective technology, in this type of turbocharger there are vanes around the turbine entry which controls the amount of exhaust gases entering the turbine inlet. So, in that way we can control the speed of the turbine and hence the compressor.

Nowadays we can find the newest technology e-turbo and with it you can control the velocity of turbine at any time.

  • Explore tutorial number 6 and 7

Tutorial number 6:

Cylinder Geometry

Turbine-in

we can see the pressure produced by turbine with high air temperature.

Compressor-out

Show us the pressure drops by some normal losses and the intercooler system works droping the temperature from 800k to 400k.

Tutorial number 7:

Turbine maps

Compressor-out

As the turbine have the proper pressure ratio for each speed (RPM), that`s why it is known as maps

Running Tutorial number 7

Results found

The Results are so close, but one very important parameter is (BSFC) and there is the point off turbochargers, we can see in tutorial 7, less fuel consumption with more power and more torque.

  • Plot operating points on compressor and turbine maps

  • In which application Variable Geometry Turbine is beneficial?
The variable geometry turbine offers the potential for improving the low-end torque, lowering part-load fuel
consumption and delivering a fast transient response on a gasoline and Diesel engines.
It can improve the fuel consumption and increase the overall turbocharger operating, it also works as a protection preventing the over-boost.
  • Explore example- Diesel VGT EGR and understand the modeling part

This shows us how impressive is that software and how many ways the turbocharger can improve the efficiency of the engines.
