Week 6:- Clamp Unit & Pin-Clamp Unit Design Challenge

Design 3 Different types of Swivel Clamp Unit with Different Riser, Blade, and Clamp Arm for the given Car Panel. Maintain the stroke as 100mm

ANS:- In case of swivel clamp piston moves linearly. With the help of pivot arm and swing arm we can create engaging and disengaging mechanism for clamp. It is complex in design than normal power clamp. It includes more components than normal power clamp. Also maintaining the stroke of piston and alignment of swing arm is complex in design. Cylinder pivots about hanging point with the blade so maintaining proper clearance is must. It includes various parts as follows:-

Clamp Arm:- Clamp arm is a holding component for panel. It swings with the swing arm from Upper side of the panel it is simple in design but important part in unit.

Rest arm:- Rest arm is use for resting of the car panel. It placed mutually opposite to the clamp arm.

Swing arm:- Swing arm is important component in unit. It connects piston of the cylinder to clamp arm. It pivots about the pivot point which gives it swinging movement. While designing of the swing arm its length and the point of the pivot are important factors. It must be at least 10MM away from the car panel.

Blade:- Basically blade connects all the components of the unit assembly to the riser. It can be of any shape and it is mostly make part. It is simple in design and manufacturing. But precision of measurements is to maintain while designing.

Riser:- Riser is used to raise the height of whole assembly from base unit. It is either make part or standard part. Riser need to be strong. As it needs to bear little swinging movement of cylinder.

Design a Pin-Clamp Unit for the given Car Panel.

ANS:- Pin-clamp unit is combination of pin and clamp unit together. This unit locates the car panel with the help of pin and also holds the car panel with the help of clamp. Due to more functionality this is complex in design. It needs to mount pin and clamp over one riser. In this case blade design will be a critical part as it holds both the unit toghther. While designing we need to maintain proper distance of pin and clamp from blade with the help of proper shimming. It includes various parts as follows:-

Pin:- Pin is used for locating purpose. It locates the car panel with the help of hole present over car panel. It is not complex but its placement over assembly is complex procedure.

Clamp:- Clamp hold the car panel. It moves with arm of cylinder. It is simple in design.

Blade:- Blade is important component in pin clamp unit as it holds both the unit together. It is simple in design but its measurement need to be precise. It connects the whole assembly to the riser.

Riser:- Riser is use to raise the height of assembly via blade from the base unit. It is either make part or standard part.
