Week-6 Challenge: EV Drivetrain

EV LIVE BATCH 16

1)

There are 4 types of power converters:

a)AC/DC converter

b)AC/AC converter

c)DC/AC converter

d)DC/DC converter

Power converter is made of high power fast acting semiconductor devices, such as BJT(bipolar junction transistor).there are some other transistors such as MOSFET,IGBT,SCR,GTO,MCT. These devices are used to switch convert the supply voltage into a variable voltage and variable frequency supply. All these devices have a control input gate through which devices are turned on and off as per command generated by controller. There are 2 types of converter step up(low voltage to high voltage) and step down(high voltage to low voltage).

2)

3)

voltage=50

motor constant=0.6

armature resistance=0.4

with increase in torque speed decreases.

4)

a)In the beginning author describes dominance of internal combustion engine in world of automobile industry and also discuss different types of of engines and explains that all engines were similar and were upto users to select according to their requirements.he also says that induction motor and brushless dc motor will be used widely for coming years.

b)he explains the working of both 3phase induction and brushless dc motor.

c)according to the author he did research between two technologies and compares the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

d)induction motor have advantages like no magnets, ability to start under load, inverter is not needed.disadvantages are cannot operate from dc,ac is a must.shaft speed is proportionate to line frequency, hence when used with utility power, they are constant speed machines.when operated from utility power, they have limites atarting torque and limited running peak torque capabilities, when compared to dc type machines.

e)brushless dc motor have advantages like much less rotor heat is generated with dc brushless drive. peak point energy efficiency for a dc brushless drive is a few percentage point higher than for an induction drive.disadvantages are largeer the machine, magnetic losses increase proportionately and part load efficiency drops. permanent magnets are expensive and difficult to handle due to large forces that come into play when anything ferromagnetic gets close to them.

f) finally author couldnt choose which is better butsays brushless motor will continue to dominate in hybrid and plug in hybrid markets whereas induction will maintain dominance for high performance pure electric vehicles.
