Week-6 Challenge: EV Drivetrain

Question 1)

Which types of power converter circuits are employed in an electric and hybrid electric vehicles?

Ans :-

  • AC to DC converter (rectifier) for charging of the battery.
  • DC to AC converter (inverter) for battery to the induction motor.
  • DC to DC converter (buck or boost converter) required for auxiliary vehicle elements such as headlight, indicator etc.
  • AC to AC converter (step up or step down transformer) for small equipment which are intended to work on ac only.

Question 2)

solution:-

Question 3)

Develop a mathematical model of a DC Motor for the below equation using Simulink.

      ω=   (V/Kϕ>ϕ) - (Ra/Kϕ^2 )*T

 Question 4)

Refer to the blog on below topic:

            Induction Versus DC brushless motors by Wally Rippel, Tesla

            Explain in brief about the author’s perspective.

The blog is a kind of differentiative blog between Induction motor and Permanent magnet DC brushless motor. In the coming days more things are on the way like battery life, motor performance or improved efficiencies, stability. Nowadays all hybrid vehicles are using DC brushless motors and induction motors are only used in full performance electric vehicles and it was lastly being used in General motors GM EV1. Both of the motors have the same stator. Both use 3 phase inverter modeling also. but in the case of a Permanent Magnet DC motor, there is a need for one positioning sensor on the stator to detect a position of the pole on the stator according to that control signal is generated by the electric control signal generator. Also as its name suggests Brushless so heating due to brush is absent and this motor can also work on unity pf whereas induction motor runs on 0.85 pf. Different losses happen in motor like hysteresis and eddy current loss related to a magnet which can be minimized by controlling the value of magnetic flux density B. Controlling this value in the case of the permanent magnet is not possible so induction motor gets the advantageous point here by controlling Voltage/Frequency magnet field can be controlled. In the last autoher says dc burshless motor may get used side by side with Induction motor with requirement.
