Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
Objective:
This challenge aims to perform the structural analysis on the sphere by penetrating it into the flat plate and capturing the plastic deformation in the plate.
Material :
The Material used for this analysis is structural steel for the sphere and structural steel non-linear for the plate.
Properties of Structural Steel non-linear are shown in fig. below.

Geometry:
As the whole geometry is symmetric, we consider the quarter portion of it to reduce the computational time.

Meshing:
For sphere, we have given the Hex mesh with body sizing of 1mm and we have generated the default mesh on a plate.

Contacts:
We have defined the frictional contact between the plate and the sphere with a coefficient of friction=0.74.

Boundary Conditions:
We have fixed the plate with fixed support.

We have given the displacement of 4 mm to the sphere in 4 steps.

We are retracting the sphere to its original position to see whether the plastic deformation in the plate is occurring or not.
Analysis Settings:
We are solving this simulation in 4 steps

Results:
Total Deformation:

The deformation of the plate in the Y direction is 0.3299 mm.
Equivalent Stress in the plate:

Equivalent Strain:

Equivalent Plastic Strain:

Conclusion:
1) From Plastic Strain Result, we can see that permanent deformation has occurred in the plate.
2) Stress occurred in the plate is 3294.9 MPa which is beyond the yield strength (250 MPa), indicating that the plate is in a plastic zone.
