Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Sphere pressing on a plate:

Aim:

To perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing a plate using structural steel for the sphere and non-linear structural steel for the plate as the materials and to find deformation on the plate, along equiavalent stress and strain on both sphere and plate.

Objective:

For this challenge, perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.

Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non Linear.

Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by you. Attach appropriate images and make a detailed report.

Procedure:

  • Firstly open ANSYS workbench software.
  • Select static structural from analysis system.
  • In the engineering data select structural steel Non-linear from General non-linear materials.
  • And then import the geometry from the system files.
  • After importing the model the image is as follows.

  • Assign the structural steel Non-linear material to the plate.
  • And in connections create a manual contact region between sphere and plate.
  • Assign frictioanal contact between them with a frictional coefficient of 0.74.

  • And then create a symmetry region at both the sides along the x-axis and Z-axis.

  • Then we proceed for meshing and create a body- sizing for the sphere with a element size as 2mm as shown.

  • And in analysis settings assign no of steps as 4 and solver type as direct.
  • Assign fixed support at the bottom of the plate as

  • Assign displacement at the top of the sphere along Y-axis.

  • And in displacement assign the 4-steps as mentioned in the tabular data as follows.

  • And finally we need to find Directional deformation, equiavelnt stress and strain for the sphere and plate as well.

Results:

  • The directional deformation along the axis is

Maximum-0.32564 mm

Minimum- -3.3653 mm

Gif:

  • The Equivalent stress on the plate is

Maximum- 3070.8 mpa

Minimum- 66.233 mpa

  • Gif:

  • The equivalent stress on the sphere is

Maximum- 0.60047 mpa

Minimum- 0.024687 mpa

Gif:

  • The Equivalent elastic strain on the sphere

Maximum-3.4701e-6 mm/mm

Minimum- 1.3037e-7 mm/mm

Gif:

  • The equiavalent ealstic strain on the plate is

Maximum- 0.015385 mm/mm

Minimum- 0.0003975 mm/mm

Conclusion:

The simulation has been performed on the sphere and plate as mentioned and along with plastic deformation is captured as well.
