Rest Unit & Clamp Unit Design

AIM :

To study about the various design aspects regarding BIW fixtures.

OBJECTIVE :

• To deisgn 3 different types of Clamp Unit with Different Riser, Blade and Clamp Arm for the given Car Panel.
• To design 2 different types of Rest Unit for the given Car Panel.

Clamp Unit

A Clamp unit is a unit which is designed to clam or hold the car panel.

The various parts of a Clamp unit are as follows,

• Clamp Arm
• Clamp Cylinder
• Finger
• Rest
• Shims
• Plate
• L Block
• Riser

Clamp Arm

• A Clamp Arm is the part of a cylinderto which all the moving parts are fixed.
• It is a bought out part.

Clamp Cylinder

• Clam cylinder is pneumatic device that works with pressurized air.
• It is used to open and close the components attached with the clamp arm.
• It is a bought out part.

Finger

• Finger is an NC block which is attached to the clamp arm of the cylinder.
• It used used to hold the car panel by pressing it against the rest.
• It is also known as Clamp Mylar.

Rest

• The Rest is attahced to the car panel to provide support to it.
• It also resists the clamping force provided by the finger and clamp arm.
• It is also known as Rest Mylar.

Shims

• Shims are used foe the adjustment of the locators.
• In generaal these are standard parts.
• Shim blocks can be adjusted according to the manufacturing deviations.

Plate

• Plate or Blade is an optional block which can be used according to the design requirements
• Blade is the part which is used to connect the entire unit with the riser block.
• It can either be a make part or a standard part.

Block

• Blocks are generally used to accommodate the shimming directions.
• It is also used for the ease of design.
• Blocks can be of L shape.

Riser

• Riser is the part on which the all the units are mounted.
• It provides support to the unit and attaches itself to the base.
• It can either be a make part or a standard part.

Rest Unit

A Rest Unit is used to support the entire car pannel from underneath.

It is a simple unit which used only used to support the panel.

In order to save the overrall cost, it can be combined with other unit such as locating unit.

The various parts of a fixed pin unit are as follows,

• NC blocks
• Shims
• Blade
• Riser
