Week 5:- Rest Unit & Clamp Unit Design Challenge
Design of Clamp units and Rest unit using CATIA V5
OBJECTIVE:
- Design two different rest units
- Design three different power clamp units
INTRODUCTION:
- The clamp unit is a fixture used for holding the car panel in place. The clamp unit is operated by a pneumatic cylinder. The cylinder opens and closes the clamp of the clamp unit.
- The rest unit is a fixture on which the car panel will rest.
PARTS OF THE CLAMP UNIT:
- Finger: This is the part which is holds the car panel. It is a NC block.
- Rest: This is the part on which the car panel will rest.
- Clamp arm: A clamp arm is used to clamp the car panel to the fixture. All the movable parts are fixed to the car arm.
- Clamp cylinder: This part is used to open or close the car arm in order to release the car panel. These are bought out parts. Manufactured by Tunkers. The bore diamter Of the
- cylinder 40, 50, 60, or 80.
Car Panel:

All the Clamps:

Clamp cylinder:
1. V_50_1_BR3_A40_T12_TUENKERS.1

2. APH_50_BR5_A40_T12_TUENKERS.1

Clamp unit 1:
Design methodology:
- The Clap arm is designed first
- The clamp cylinder is then positioned on to the clamp arm
- The rest mylar is designed and positioned under the panel
- The riser is then designed according to the the height of the cylinder

- This unit is a power clamp with a square rest mylar.
- It has a L-shaped riser
- Clamp: V_50_1_BR3_A40_T12_TUENKERS.1
Clamp:

- The clamp is 160 mm long and is 100 mm in height
- The clamp is 40 mm thick
Rest Mylar:

- The rest mylar is 40 mm thick
- It is 260 mm in length
- 160 mm in width

Riser:

The riser used is a L-Shaped riser.

Clamp unit 2:

This clamp unit has a T-Shaped riser
The rest mylar is attached to the cylinder
The clamp mylar has the same shape as the rest mylar.
Design methodology:
- The clamp mylar is designed first by placing the grabbing end of the mylar on the panel.
- The clamp cylinder is then attached to the clamp
- depending on the height of the holes in the cylinder the riser is designed.
- The rest mylar is the attached to the cylinder to bring it directly below the clamp mylar
Clamp:
The clamp is 210 mm in length. It is 20 mm thick and 20 mm wide

Riser:

Clamp unit 3:

Design methodology:
- The clamp arm was designed first by placing the grabbing end of the arm on the panel.
- The cylinder is then placed and positioned on the clamp arm.
- The rest mylar is then designed by placing it on the cylinder.
- The L-Shaped riser is designed according to the height of the cylinder.

Clamp unit 4:

Design methodology:
- The square block is designed first and placed on the panel
- The clamp arm was then designed starting from the square block
- The cylinder was then placed on the clamp arem
- The riser was made from the cylinder
- The base the riser was made
- The rest mylar is attached to the riser itself

5. Clamp Unit 5:

Design methodology:
- The clamp are is made with teeths on it
- The clamp arm is made and placed on the panel
- the clamp is the attached to the clamp
- The rest mylar is attched to the cylinder.
- The riser is designed according to the height of the clamp unit

Conclusion:
Five clamp were designed in CATIA V5. Different clamp arms were designed and different rest mylars were designed. The parts are assebled on the given car panel
