Week 5 Challenge : Surface wrap on Automotive Assembly
WEEK 5: SURFACE WRAP ON AUTOMOTIVE ASSEMBLY
AIM:
To perform geometrical clean-up for the models and merge the models to perform surface wrap with target length of 3 mm.
PROCEDURE:
- The engine model is imported to the interface and the unchecked surfaces are deleted using ‘universal delete’ option.
- The unwanted surfaces (rings) and the overlapped surfaces are deleted by hiding the important PIDs.

- The thinner sections such as belts can also be removed because they cannot capture the mesh properly.
- The open holes existing in the model are also covered by creating a new surface.

GEARBOX
- The gearbox model is imported and is checked for duplicate surfaces. The duplicate surfaces are deleted using ‘universal delete’ option.
- The open surfaces are closed by creating new surfaces using ‘coons’ option.

TRANSMISSION BOX:
The duplicate surfaces are deleted and the open locations are closed by creating surfaces using ‘coons’ option.

- The different models are merged one at a time using merge option in ‘file’ menu.

SURFACE WRAPING:
- Select ‘Mesh’ deck, and under ‘Elements’ menu and select ‘Wrap’ with constant length. Double click on ‘empty’ and a dialog box appears.

- Click on ‘untitled’ and a dialog box appears, enter the target length as 3 mm.

- The contents for the surface wrap are assigned by double clicking ‘0’ in contents column. The PIDs are selected (91in this case) and are moved to the octree scenario.

- After the contents and the parameters are assigned, select ‘Run’ option to assign the surface wrap on the assembly.

- The surface wrap appears to be captured correctly and has 7,39,034 tria elements.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS:
- The components of an automotive assembly are performed with a target length of 3 mm.
- The quality of the surface wrap is dependent on the target length, smaller the target length, more will be the quality and time taken will be more and vice-versa.
