REVIT_Revision w.r.t code_Week 5

1) The main purpose of building codes are to protect public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to the construction and occupancy of buildings and structures. The building code becomes law of a particular jurisdiction when formally enacted by the appropriate governmental or private authority. As we follow standard codes of building in the software it gives us the drawing as per the specification in the code book which are ready for construction and can be followed by the vendor.

2) From the National Building Code list, the groups that will be essential in modelling aproject in revit are :-

  1. Architects
  2. Civil Engineer
  3. Structural Engineer
  4. Electrical Engineer
  5. Plumbing Engineer
  6. Fire protection Engineer
  7. HVAC Engineer
  8. Environment Specialist
  9. Town Planner
  10. Urban Engineer
  11. Landscape Architects
  12. Security System Engineer
  13. Interior Designer
  14. Quantity Surveyor
  15. Project Manager
  16. Other Specialists

3) The five major steps that occur in project cycle are devoloped by the Project Management Institute (PMI), the five phases of project management include :

  1. Initiation
  2. Planning
  3. Execution
  4. Monitoring
  5. Project Close

Initiation :

  1. Formalisation of design with clients
  2. Site investigation/survey
  3. Preparation of alternative design
  4. Selection of concept design
  5. Sizing the system
  6. Development of design
  7. Preparation of Primary design
  8. Preparation of cost estimation
  9. Preparation of detailed BOQ
  10. Tendor document

Planning :

  1. The vendor will start the planning how to execute the work
  2. Preparation of cost
  3. Preparation of Schedules
  4. Labor arrangement
  5. Machineries arrangement
  6. Site office
  7. Deployment of engineers
  8. Material requirement

Execution :

  1. Start of the work
  2. Excavation
  3. Foundations
  4. Materials

Monitoring :

  1. It is monitored by the higher officials as work is going as per schedules
  2. Problems at site
  3. Finding alternatives for work if stuck

Project close :

  1. Finishing
  2. Checking
  3. Handover

4) The different disciplines involved in the construction of project are :-

  • Architects
  • Civil Engineer
  • Structural Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Plumbing Engineer
  • Fire protection Engineer
  • HVAC Engineer
  • Environment Specialist
  • Town Planner
  • Urban Engineer
  • Landscape Architects
  • Security System Engineer
  • Interior Designer
  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Project Manager
  • Other Specialists

5) Buildings are classified as different ways as follows :

  • Residential building
  • Industrial building
  • Educational building
  • Institutional building
  • Assembly building
  • Business building
  • Mercatile building
  • Storage building
  • Hazardous building

The following buildings are under corresponding categories :

a) Four unit apartments - Residential building

b) School with capacity of 1000 students - Educational building

c) A single unit shop - Mercatile building

d) Multi story shopping complex - Commercial/Mercatile building

e) Steel machine factory - Industrial building

6) The design team for construction of projects consists of architects and engineers. Often, the team itself may consists of an architectural firm and engineering firm which themselves employ several architects or engineers. Each of these groups can have individuals that specialize in specific areas of design and engineering.

Architects :-

The architect or architectural team is responsible for the design stage of the project. The architect will take an idea the owner has and if that idea is feasible, create a design around it. Different types of architects may specialize in different types of projects. Some architects specialize in specific types of buildings, while some others specialize in subset of the project itself. For example, in a single project, we may have an architect who is designing the physical structure for the project and a second landscape architect that is responsible for designing the exterior portion of the project. Architecture is both an art and a science. Modern professional architects seek to produce buildings that are aesthetically pleasing and functional. Increasingly, architects are focusing on incorporating sustainability in to their designs, and charting out new ways to add value to the client through design processes.

Engineers :-

Design team will almost certainly consists of one or more engineers in addition to the architects. Engineers are responsible for ensuring the finished product of the construction project is safely and appropriately constructed. But this isn't all engineers do on construction project. Engineers make sure that the project is as efficient as possible, reducing costs while maintaining necessary safety features. Engineers will also conduct an initial survey of the building site to assess feasibility for the project and get a sense of any special accommodations that may need to be made.

An important aspect of what civil engineers are responsible for is ensuring that all local and state legal requirements are met for your project. Early on, this means closely tracking changes to the design to ensure that plans and specifications include any necessary requirements. Effective engineering firms also specialize in optimizing the building process by finding ways to build more efficiently, reducing both costs and time associated with the project.

One of the roles of the project manager during the design process is to facilitate the flow of information between other entities involved in the process. This includes the client, architects, and engineers. At a certain point , this may also include bringing a general contractor on board and incorporating them into design discussions. Like other parts of construction projects, in order to be effective, project management teams must be familiar with the design process as a whole. They must understand where problems might arise and work to mitigate those problems as efficiently as possible. The project manager is also responsible for ensuring that each team member has a clear understanding of the budget and schedule. This will help ensure that the design will progress within the project budget and time constraints. Project managers are typically engaged throughout the design process. The design phase occupies a significant portion of the preconstrruction phase. Design considerations can impact the project timeline and budget and may require the project manager to revise the project's strategic plan.

7) AIM : To model the project as per the NBC requirements

COMMANDS USED :

  • Architecture
  • Walls
  • Roof
  • Ceiling

PROCEDURE :

  • Open the project file in revit
  • Select the ground floor plan and see the dimension of the rooms and other things if it satisfy the NBC clause, leave it otherwise modify
  • Select the elevation view and change the height of the floor to 12'
  • Select the walls and constraint it to the levels
  • Walls will automatically change its height
  • Select the 3D view and see the changes
  • Complete the model as per the NBC standards if required as other specification is satisfying my NBC standards

RESULT :

8) As per question 7 all the standards of NBC are satisfying in my building except for the height of floor

  • Height of the building should be 1.5 times the width of the street and as i have made this model in a residential town, my street width is 10m so the height of my building should be 1.5x10=15m
  • Area limitations can be seen from the table 3 of floor area ratio FAR
  • FAR = Total covered area of all floors/total plot area
  • Room size is standard as per NBC
  • Kitchen area with separate dining room should not be less than 5 m^2
